Why Using AI for Local Content Is the Worst Strategy (And What to Do Instead)

A friend of mine has an AI problem.

She’s a lifelong resident in her town (born and raised) and whenever I ask “oh, what’s that?” as we’re driving around, she knows exactly what it is and whether it’s a “must-go” or a “skip-it.”

She knows all the insider news, all the locals-only hotspots, EVERYTHING about the area.

But here’s the problem.

When we tried to film local content with her, she pulled out notes that weren’t written by her. They were written by ChatGPT.

By a machine that knows nothing about her town.

The AI Local Content Disaster

She was reading AI-generated talking points about her own hometown. The place she’d lived for 40+ years.

But that wasn’t even the worst part.

The real problem was that she was frazzled.

She kept trying to memorize and repeat what some algorithm had written about her community.

And if that wasn’t bad enough, the places she was talking about sucked. She had just told me so the day before.

Instead of talking about her actual favorite breakfast places (including a little family-owned café), she read off ChatGPT’s “best brunch spots downtown!”

Why AI Kills Your Local Credibility

The whole point of her recording local content was to stand out from other Realtors in the area.

But ChatGPT gave her the same “local recommendations” it gives to every other Realtor in her market.

The same coffee shops (usually the most obvious ones).
The same “hidden gems” (that aren’t hidden anymore).
The same family activities (that everyone already knows about).

The result? Content that sounds local but feels completely generic.

What Actually Makes Local Content Stand Out

Real local content isn’t about finding the “best” places according to some algorithm.

It’s about sharing the places that are authentically part of your life.

The coffee shop where you actually get your morning coffee (even if it’s not the trendy one everyone posts about).

The trail you discovered by accident when you took a wrong turn six months ago.

The family restaurant where you celebrated your kid’s birthday because they have that one dessert they love.

The hardware store where the owner remembers your name and always knows exactly what weird thing you’re trying to fix.

These aren’t necessarily “top rated” spots. They’re your spots. And that’s what makes them impossible to replicate.

The Death of Authentic Local Expertise

Here’s what I see happening everywhere: business owners asking AI to help them “create local content,” then posting about places they’ve never actually been to.

AI suggests: “The best brunch spot in downtown [city]”
Reality: You’ve never eaten there, don’t know what the parking situation is like, can’t tell anyone which dishes are actually good or how long the wait usually is.

AI suggests: “Top 3 hiking trails for families”
Reality: You don’t hike, have no idea which trail is actually good for kids, and can’t give practical advice about difficulty level or what to bring.

Why AI Makes You Sound Like Everyone Else

When AI tells you the “best local spots,” it’s pulling from the most commonly mentioned places online.

Which means every other business owner in your market is getting the exact same suggestions.

You end up recommending:

  • The same downtown coffee shop
  • The same popular hiking trail
  • The same family restaurant that everyone already talks about
  • The same “hidden gems” that show up on every list

Your “local content” becomes indistinguishable from your competition.

What to Do Instead

Stop asking AI where you should recommend. Start documenting where you actually go.

Instead of: “AI, what are the best local restaurants?”
Try: Posting about where you went for lunch yesterday and why you chose it.

Instead of: “AI, what local events should I promote?”
Try: Sharing your experience at the event you actually attended.

Instead of: “AI, what are the hidden gems in my area?”
Try: Talking about the place you discovered organically and what made it special to you.

The Content That Can’t Be Replicated

Your personal relationship with your community is the only content strategy that AI can’t give to your competition.

The story about why you chose this neighborhood for your own family. The local business owner you’ve developed a friendship with. The community problem you’ve watched develop over time. The seasonal change you look forward to every year.

These are proof that you don’t just work in the area. You live it.

Your Anti-AI Local Content Challenge

For the next two weeks, create local content using this rule:

Only post about places you’ve personally been to in the last couple of months.

Not places AI told you were good.
Not spots you think you should recommend.
Not locations you’ve been meaning to try.

Places where you’ve actually spent your time and money. Places you can describe from personal experience. Places that are genuinely part of your life.

Watch what happens when you stop sounding like everyone else and start sounding like yourself.

Why This Strategy Works Better

When you share places from your actual life:

You can tell real stories. Not just “this place is great,” but “here’s what happened when I went there last week.”

You have genuine opinions. You know what’s good, what’s overpriced, what’s changed recently.

You’re naturally enthusiastic. You’re not faking excitement about a place AI told you about. You’re genuinely sharing something you like.

You build real trust. People can tell the difference between authentic recommendations and algorithmic suggestions.

FAQ About Creating AI-Free Local Content

What if I don’t go many places?
Then go to more places. Exploring your community isn’t just content strategy; it’s actually knowing your market.

Can I use AI for anything in my local content?
Maybe for basic research or organizing thoughts, but never for the actual recommendations or stories. Those must be yours.

What if the places I go aren’t “cool” enough?
Authenticity beats cool every time. Your actual favorite hole-in-the-wall spot is more interesting than the trendy place you’ve never visited.

How do I find more local spots to feature?
Ask other locals. Explore neighborhoods you don’t usually visit. Pay attention when you’re out. The content is everywhere.

The Bottom Line

AI can help you with a lot of things, but authenticity isn’t one of them.

When you rely on AI to tell you what’s good in your own community, you’re essentially admitting that you don’t actually know your market well enough to recommend it from personal experience.

Your competition is using AI to create local content. You can win by actually living locally and sharing that experience.

The places you genuinely love, the experiences you’ve actually had, the community connections you’ve personally built.

That’s content no algorithm can generate for someone else.
