We’re engaged! But before we share that story, we talk about pronoia (the opposite of paranoia), choosing to believe the universe is working in your favor. And how that simple shift changes what you notice, how you feel, and how you perform.

We also talk about a gratitude practice that’s not a reaction (“grateful for”), but surprisingly far more effective.

Plus, a wiener dog joins the show mid-episode!

So many kind strangers have randomly taken our photo and shared them with us over the past ten years. See them all here!

Choose to believe that the universe is conspiring behind your back to make you a success.

00:00:07 Amara Andrew

Hey explorers, welcome back to Useful Not Famous, the show where we gather and share the secrets that give your business an unfair advantage. Darn tootin', I'm Amara.

00:00:16 Jeff Sarris

I'm Jeff Sarris.

00:00:17 Amara Andrew

And if you are watching this, you can tell that we are not in our regularly scheduled programming spot. We're here on site in South Beach, in Miami.

00:00:26 Jeff Sarris

In Miami Beach.

00:00:27 Amara Andrew

One of our favorite places. We have some big news, but we're going to share that later on in the show.

00:00:33 Jeff Sarris

We'll tell the story later, but what is the well, first, the beginning, choosing that the world is conspiring to make us better, to make us a success, it's the opposite of paranoia. Paranoia is thinking everyone's out to get you, but there's actually a word for it, it's pronoia,

00:00:55 Amara Andrew

.

00:00:56 Jeff Sarris

Which is like a really fun

00:00:58 Amara Andrew

Oh, that's like positive, too, like pro something.

00:01:00 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, and like para- I don't know why para-, that sounds like

00:01:04 Amara Andrew

Parasite?

00:01:05 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, or like a

00:01:06 Amara Andrew

Pericles?

00:01:07 Jeff Sarris

Pericles. That's an inside baseball, but it's a

00:01:14 Amara Andrew

Paranormal?

00:01:15 Jeff Sarris

Like I think of paranormal and paranoia, but then pronoia,

00:01:21 Amara Andrew

Huh.

00:01:21 Jeff Sarris

Which I think is it's really fun to have the exact opposite, because

00:01:24 Amara Andrew

Am I covered in beach sand?

00:01:25 Jeff Sarris

No, you have like a little hair, might be a little a little peeling through the, oh, yeah, don't rub it. It's a little peeling.

00:01:30 Amara Andrew

Oh, no.

00:01:31 Jeff Sarris

-oh.

00:01:32 Amara Andrew

Well, you're seeing this in real time, everyone. My nose is peeling.

00:01:33 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, we literally just came up from the beach. Breaking news, everyone, my nose is peeling!

00:01:38 Amara Andrew

But pronoia, paranoia. So, believing that the universe is conspiring for us. That's so interesting, because it's the exact opposite I feel like how basically every person thinks.

'Cause like

00:01:53 Jeff Sarris

And by every person, we mean

00:01:56 Amara Andrew

Everyone?

00:01:57 Jeff Sarris

Oh, but also us.

00:01:58 Amara Andrew

Well, yeah, that's what I like literally everybody. 'Cause like I would say that we're two very positive, like upbeat, like trying to think positively always people, but

00:02:10 Jeff Sarris

-.

00:02:10 Amara Andrew

Yeah, like on our last trip to Miami, May of last year, which I can't believe it's been that long since we've been here. That's like unheard of for us. But I wasn't in a good head space.

Like I was in that paranoia space where it just felt like again, it's all self-imposed. I want to start with that,

00:02:30 Jeff Sarris

Yeah.

00:02:31 Amara Andrew

But the idea of see, not even having like everybody or everything against you, 'cause I didn't think that, but it just it felt very isolating and a lot of things happened at once that maybe weren't my favorite things. So, feeling like things weren't working out, I guess, is how I would say it, 'cause again, it wasn't like, "Well, it's me versus them," and all that.

Like, there was a degree of that, but not to the same extent that I think a lot of other people have.

00:03:00 Jeff Sarris

When I think zooming out a little more, it's the it's not even as narrow, but there was a consistent worry.

00:03:10 Amara Andrew

Yes.

00:03:11 Jeff Sarris

So, whether it's like success in business growth or money or

00:03:16 Amara Andrew

Relationships, or whatever.

00:03:17 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, happiness or all of it,

00:03:19 Amara Andrew

Yeah.

00:03:19 Jeff Sarris

Where there was a point this year

00:03:22 Amara Andrew

Well, and like I couldn't get out of it, which was really difficult.

00:03:25 Jeff Sarris

Yeah.

00:03:26 Amara Andrew

But then there was a point this year where I feel like it was just decided like, "No, everything's perfect."

00:03:30 Jeff Sarris

Yeah.

00:03:31 Amara Andrew

Well, and like it had to like It kind of was just overnight, that shift, where it was like 'Cause like I can definitely get in a funk, like a depressive sort of state, and just stay in that for like months and not come out of it, or even like weeks, whatever, and it takes a long time to get out of it. But I think you, my little eternal optimist, you were just like

00:03:54 Jeff Sarris

Ha!

00:03:55 Amara Andrew

Like something that you always say is like, "Everything always works out." And that's true, but like you had said that, but I think it was just the way you said it or how you said it. It just felt like, yeah, why am I upset or like feeling sorry for myself, or like I don't even know how to describe it, but why am I not feeling happy and positive and being stuck in this negative mental space when that's not doing any good, it's only hurting me, and like I need to just work through it and actually be successful and like get myself to a spot where I do feel good and do feel proud.

But it was very hard to get out of that, but then as soon as you It was just the way you said it. I don't know what it was. And I was just like, yeah, what the hell am I doing?

This isn't me. I don't know if it was like my gut bacteria or what.

00:04:47 Jeff Sarris

Well, no, but it's hard

00:04:48 Amara Andrew

Yeah.

00:04:49 Jeff Sarris

Because everything, we want to improve everything.

00:04:52 Amara Andrew

Yeah.

00:04:53 Jeff Sarris

We are problem solvers and solution makers,

00:04:56 Amara Andrew

Yeah, well, and I'm very hard on myself, always.

00:04:58 Jeff Sarris

But like everything is what we think it is.

00:05:03 Amara Andrew

Yeah.

00:05:04 Jeff Sarris

If we think If we think the world is negative and everyone's negative,

00:05:09 Amara Andrew

-.

00:05:10 Jeff Sarris

We're going to find that, and that's the crazy thing. If we think everything's perfect, we're perfect, like meaning like in the best way, not

00:05:20 Amara Andrew

Oh yeah, not arrogant.

00:05:21 Jeff Sarris

Like I If you physically feel good about how you look, you're going to end up looking better. If you physically feel good If you mentally feel good about how you think and how smart you are, or how capable you are, you are going to be more capable. You don't have someone like a relentless person, like a Michael Jordan or a Tom Brady, you don't have them doubting.

That's not a They're never self-deprecating. They're purely, only, ever, "I am going to be the best." And that's how you become the best, 'cause you can't question if you will, you do it. And I don't know why, when you were just talking, it reminded me of there's one Nickelback song, which I know is your favorite band ever.

00:06:06 Amara Andrew

Jeff loves Nickelback.

00:06:07 Jeff Sarris

Well, yeah, I mean there's reasons, and you need to there's more context, but they're better than you think they are.

00:06:13 Amara Andrew

They actually are. I as a self-proclaimed Nickelback hater from way back, from the '00s,

00:06:19 Jeff Sarris

Sheep!

00:06:21 Amara Andrew

I can confirm there are some actual bangers that I didn't know were Nickelback, and he's played them, and I was like, "Who's this?" And then he's like, "Nickelback." And I was like, "Ugh!" And then I was like, "Okay, fine. It's really good."

00:06:33 Jeff Sarris

Well, yeah, they know how to write hits, so that's why. It's It's a whole There's a guy that did a deep dive recently about why people hate Nickelback, and it comes down to purely making it cool to hate them. And like it came down to one person who made an off-handed quick joke on Comedy Central, who if anyone looks at him, you wouldn't be like, "That's who I want to be like."

00:06:55 Amara Andrew

Yeah.

00:06:55 Jeff Sarris

Like the everything, it's just so silly. But when you trace it back to there, you can see it like go out. But they have a song called, "Somebody Wishes They Were You."

00:07:05 Amara Andrew

.

00:07:06 Jeff Sarris

Which I think is I always thought was a very apt thing, 'cause we all think like, " like I only wish this, I only wish that,"

00:07:13 Amara Andrew

Yeah.

00:07:14 Jeff Sarris

But like somebody out there wishes they were you.

00:07:17 Amara Andrew

-huh.

00:07:18 Jeff Sarris

And that's always true no matter who you are in any capacity. Like you could You could think you're down in the dumps and like nothing's working out, but then there's people who are dealing with other things who only wish they could be where you are.

00:07:29 Amara Andrew

Well, yeah.

00:07:30 Jeff Sarris

Or you could be top of the food chain, but you still are going to wish you were this other person.

00:07:36 Amara Andrew

Well, and this is such a minor thing, but like I've gained like maybe 10 or 15 lb than at a certain point I was where I felt like so lean and so like skinny and everything. It's all mental. But I was just like I don't know what it was, I just had this epiphany where I was like, "No, I'm" and this sounds so self-aggrandizing, "but I'm somebody's after picture.

Like I'm where somebody wants to get to right now when I don't feel the best in my body." Thinking that, I instantly, I swear to God, I lost like 10 lb.

00:08:08 Jeff Sarris

Haha!

00:08:09 Amara Andrew

I just I felt the shift, and now when I see photos of myself, I don't feel as bad. Like, obviously there's always room for improvement, but I don't feel as like ugh! I don't know, it was just that little shift in how I was viewing myself that made a huge difference.

00:08:24 Jeff Sarris

Well, and you would have loved to be in the shape you are at other times in your life, and that's what's hard to remember.

00:08:29 Amara Andrew

Yeah, 'cause now I'm actually fit, like I have muscle, so I need to remember that like it's different, yeah.

00:08:31 Jeff Sarris

Oh, yeah. Well, yeah, and that's what we've talked about, like you work out and you're like you're very

00:08:36 Amara Andrew

I know, but I used to like ballerina body where you'd just be as skinny as possible and like

00:08:39 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, were striving for it. Not that's what you like were,

00:08:42 Amara Andrew

No, but that's like that was kind of the objective, is like you go for that like super skinny, like at least for me.

00:08:49 Jeff Sarris

It's the what was the documentary we just watched, America's Next

00:08:52 Amara Andrew

Oh, America's Next Top Model! That fucked me up as a kid. I didn't realize it, but rewatching it, I was like, "Oh God, this is partly where it all comes from."

00:09:00 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, we didn't rewatch the show, but there's a documentary that was actually really good about it.

00:09:02 Amara Andrew

It was really good. Yeah, I really liked it, and like as a fan of the show, apparently I watched so much of it, I didn't realize it, and then just rewatching it, I'm like, "Oh, that's where some of these things come from, like these negative thoughts."

00:09:15 Jeff Sarris

With the body dysmorphia kind of things.

00:09:17 Amara Andrew

Yeah, so anyway, I'm just like I'm happy with how I am, like my body functions, and I think, too, talking to people from different walks of life, and maybe like certain people don't quite have mobility or they're super fit and they're like 100 years old. Like just hearing all these stories and getting to talk to people and being like, "Wow, like they're so fit and they're this like old, or maybe like use this as a cautionary tale," or whatever it is, and just like making sure my body's as healthy as possible, I think I don't know, not to bring it to like that, but I know that's something that a lot of women out there can identify with.

00:09:52 Jeff Sarris

Well, yeah, and just in general, just like I really think belief is everything.

00:09:58 Amara Andrew

That was what I was going to bring up. When you were talking about Michael Jordan and all the things, I heard this on TikTok, as always, there's a rabbi that I really like what he says. It's not for religious or anything context, but it's just purely the philosophy, like the philosophical viewpoints and human condition just like the examples and the things that he says, I find I really like and it resonates with me.

But it was obviously I'm paraphrasing, 'cause he has like a very eloquent way of speaking, but it was just have gratitude in the morning. It's not for what. It's not, "I'm grateful for this," or

00:10:40 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, that was interesting when he said it.

00:10:42 Amara Andrew

I loved it. Like that

00:10:43 Jeff Sarris

Like, go on, keep going. I just remembered, now I forgot where you were going.

00:10:45 Amara Andrew

But it was like we always have gratitude for something. It's a reaction. It's

00:10:51 Jeff Sarris

Okay, there's a wiener dog, and I can actually turn this camera and show you.

00:10:55 Amara Andrew

Oh, look at it! It's a wiener dog! Oh my goodness, sweetie!

No, you missed it! -ha-ha! Oh my goodness! There's the cutest little wiener dog.

00:11:06 Jeff Sarris

So, if you're watching, you'll get to see him.

00:11:09 Amara Andrew

Hi! Hello!

00:11:13 Jeff Sarris

Oh my goodness.

00:11:14 Amara Andrew

We love wiener dogs. Oh, this is the best day ever! Hi!

Oh my goodness. Hello, cutie!

00:11:26 Jeff Sarris

What's her name?

00:11:27 Amara Andrew

Rufus. Rufus! Oh my goodness!

00:11:32 Jeff Sarris

Yeah.

00:11:34 Amara Andrew

I'm going to move this down. Rufus is crying. Oh, boy.

You stay here.

00:11:39 Jeff Sarris

Yeah.

00:11:41 Amara Andrew

Bye! Bye! So cute!

Oh my goodness! I think we need a dachshund.

00:11:47 Jeff Sarris

I know.

00:11:51 Amara Andrew

Sorry! I feel like we took him.

00:11:54 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, whoopsies!

00:11:57 Amara Andrew

Watch your foot. Oops! Okay!

00:12:00 Jeff Sarris

There you go, Rufus!

00:12:02 Amara Andrew

Bye! I think Bye! Oh my goodness, that's the best day ever!

00:12:08 Jeff Sarris

Well, that was, and I'm glad I had the camera to turn it and move it.

00:12:10 Amara Andrew

I know! That was an early birthday gift. He came straight to us.

00:12:14 Jeff Sarris

Okay, here we go, so now we got the camera back in and we are back.

00:12:16 Amara Andrew

He didn't want to leave!

00:12:17 Jeff Sarris

He was so cute. He just like saw us, he knew we were like ready.

00:12:20 Amara Andrew

He was like a perfect like brown, long-fur dachshund.

00:12:25 Jeff Sarris

He was start He was starting to come back.

00:12:27 Amara Andrew

Oh, he's like, "They were nice, they were so soft." See, grateful! Anyway, okay, so back to gratitude.

00:12:35 Jeff Sarris

So grateful! Just being grateful, period.

00:12:35 Amara Andrew

Yes, so typically, and he didn't say it like this, but I just had the unlock of typically when we're grateful or have gratitude for something, it's in reaction. So it's like, "Well, I'm grateful for this earth, I'm grateful for the water, the food that I have on my table, I'm grateful for you." Like it's a it's typically a reaction to something, like an action that just happened, or an emotion, what?

00:12:59 Jeff Sarris

I'm just like caught up with that.

00:13:01 Amara Andrew

I know, he's going to be He's going to be sort of out of it for But that's typically how we respond to gratitude, as a reaction, but the way that he said it, it made me think of gratitude as an action. Just, "I'm grateful." That's it. I'm just I'm grateful first thing when I wake up in the morning, not "I'm grateful because I woke up," not that I'm grateful because we're in Miami or anything, no because, no reaction, just purely "I'm grateful." And just having that feeling all the time, like that's made me so incredibly just like at peace and happy.

And I think you've sort of picked up on that, just like I don't even know how to describe it, but just that thought process with everything else that we've been like reading and learning and thinking about and trying to dissect has been so incredibly valuable. And it's not like I've forgotten it at certain points, but just trying to live and be grateful for not even grateful for, just grateful.

00:14:03 Jeff Sarris

-huh, well, and it's again, now this comes back to mindset, and we don't like mindset only because it's the first step.

00:14:10 Amara Andrew

And if that's the only thing that you're doing, that's a big no-no.

00:14:13 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, 'cause you can't focus only on mindset and not actually like

00:14:17 Amara Andrew

I thought you saw the doggy again!

00:14:18 Jeff Sarris

Oh, no! I'm still trying to find the He was like right here! I was just like, I think he's ours now.

00:14:23 Amara Andrew

I can't wait to watch your face again, 'cause you're just like, "I know you."

00:14:25 Jeff Sarris

You're like, "Take her," oops, spilling the news.

00:14:29 Amara Andrew

Oh, no!

00:14:30 Jeff Sarris

But yeah, because it is when we believe in like, we have to believe it, though.

00:14:36 Amara Andrew

Yes.

00:14:37 Jeff Sarris

And we believe everything is good, we believe that we attract positive attention in dogs, we believe

00:14:44 Amara Andrew

Haha!

00:14:46 Jeff Sarris

Positive energy.

00:14:48 Amara Andrew

Yeah.

00:14:49 Jeff Sarris

So it is I don't want to leave the topic, but I feel like that does tie into where we're going with sort of our news for the trip.

00:14:57 Amara Andrew

Oh, yeah, that's fine.

00:14:58 Jeff Sarris

So, one of the things that happens to us all the time, and it's happened today, today is 10 years that we have gotten like when we started to get to know each other was today, 10 years ago.

00:15:09 Amara Andrew

It is! Yeah, it was literally the day before my birthday.

00:15:12 Jeff Sarris

-huh.

00:15:13 Amara Andrew

Wow, that's crazy! March 2nd, 2016.

00:15:17 Jeff Sarris

-huh, we're actually recording this on the day we're going to post it, which is uncommon.

00:15:20 Amara Andrew

Yeah, see you in a couple hours!

00:15:21 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, but 10 years ago, today,

00:15:24 Amara Andrew

That's so crazy.

00:15:25 Jeff Sarris

And then, I don't know, a month, two months or whatever, the first time we hung out just us, we walked around the city in Chicago and hung out, and then we went to the beach for a little bit, and just we were just sitting there just hanging out, enjoying the enjoying the summer vibe, so, yeah, it was a couple months later, a few months later.

00:15:45 Amara Andrew

Yeah, it was in May, I think.

00:15:46 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, and it was a nice, sunny day. So, we're sitting on the beach, and then all of a sudden, someone walks up behind us, and was just like, "Oh, excuse me, that I don't want to bother you, but you guys look cute together, and I took these photos. I don't know if you want them, but I could send them to you."

00:16:01 Amara Andrew

And we weren't anything at that point, just friends, but I was like, "Well, this is cool!"

00:16:06 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, so then that person I don't even know if it was Air- it was 2016, I don't remember if AirDrop was really that good yet.

00:16:11 Amara Andrew

No, I think she texted it to you.

00:16:12 Jeff Sarris

I think that's what it was, so then, yeah, so then we got these photos and we had them, and it's like, "Oh, that's fun, we have photos of like the first time we hung out."

00:16:19 Amara Andrew

Oh, yeah, I was like, "That's so random!"

00:16:21 Jeff Sarris

And then, on March 3rd the following year,

00:16:25 Amara Andrew

Amara's birthday.

00:16:26 Jeff Sarris

We were at the conservatory in the city.

00:16:28 Amara Andrew

Wasn't that the following year or two years after? I think it was two years after.

00:16:31 Jeff Sarris

Okay, well, I think it was two. Okay, yeah. And then someone saw us, and they had a Polaroid camera.

They're like, "Could I actually take your picture in front of everything?"

00:16:39 Amara Andrew

But see, between that time, we weren't our normal positive selves.

00:16:44 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, the time when we weren't when people, we didn't Yeah, someone saw us and then it was a tough period of time,

00:16:52 Amara Andrew

Yeah.

00:16:53 Jeff Sarris

And then, yeah, 2018, your birthday,

00:16:56 Amara Andrew

-huh.

00:16:56 Jeff Sarris

Then people someone saw us and saw how positive and whatever it was, and they wanted to take our photo, so like they took our photo on a Polaroid and gave it to us.

00:17:05 Amara Andrew

-huh.

00:17:06 Jeff Sarris

So, that was the second time a stranger decided to take our photo. And this is where I'm going with this, is we have then, what's the third time?

00:17:14 Amara Andrew

Third time was here on my birthday, yeah,

00:17:18 Jeff Sarris

In Miami,

00:17:18 Amara Andrew

Like the year after that.

00:17:19 Jeff Sarris

Same idea.

00:17:21 Amara Andrew

And then

00:17:22 Jeff Sarris

We were on the beach, and we were just sort of laughing and hugging, or whatever, and then someone was like, "Oh, you guys look cute." I took Again, it was a Polaroid.

00:17:29 Amara Andrew

-huh.

00:17:29 Jeff Sarris

I took this of you, I don't know if you want it, but

00:17:32 Amara Andrew

And then again was May of last year.

00:17:35 Jeff Sarris

Well, before that,

00:17:37 Amara Andrew

Oh! Ben in Italy.

00:17:38 Jeff Sarris

Oh, yeah.

00:17:39 Amara Andrew

We were at the Trevi Foun- Trevi Fountain.

00:17:40 Jeff Sarris

I was like, "I'm missing one!" Yeah, Trevi Fountain for my dad's birthday. Yeah, so that was like two years ago now. Three?

Two years.

00:17:46 Amara Andrew

Two.

00:17:47 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, so we were there, and then someone walked up and she was just like, "You guys look really cute together, so I just took these photo-" Or do the you have to do with the accent.

00:17:55 Amara Andrew

No, she's American.

00:17:56 Jeff Sarris

No, she wasn't. She was definitely Italian.

00:17:58 Amara Andrew

I thought she was American.

00:17:59 Jeff Sarris

-.

00:18:00 Amara Andrew

Oh.

00:18:01 Jeff Sarris

Or she was definitely not American English speaker. It was a accent.

00:18:06 Amara Andrew

Did she? Oh, I didn't catch that accent. Let's cut that.

00:18:10 Jeff Sarris

That was offensive to Italians, or whatever that was everywhere.

00:18:13 Amara Andrew

Haha!

00:18:14 Jeff Sarris

But then she was like, "I don't know if you want, but here's a photo."

00:18:19 Amara Andrew

Yeah, she's just like, "You look so cute, you smell like a pasta."

00:18:23 Jeff Sarris

Number one most offensive podcast in the United States.

00:18:27 Amara Andrew

Pasta talk.

00:18:29 Jeff Sarris

So, that was number four,

00:18:32 Amara Andrew

Yeah.

00:18:32 Jeff Sarris

I think. And then the next one was here in Miami last May,

00:18:37 Amara Andrew

Yeah.

00:18:38 Jeff Sarris

When we were we had such a great time, and it was the Air and Sea Show,

00:18:42 Amara Andrew

Yeah.

00:18:42 Jeff Sarris

And we were we did it was so silly.

00:18:45 Amara Andrew

I was trying to time a photo.

00:18:47 Jeff Sarris

And I was filming while we were doing that, and then someone saw us doing it and filmed us doing it.

00:18:52 Amara Andrew

Haha!

00:18:52 Jeff Sarris

So, it's so meta, and then she's like, "I thought that was fun, so do you want the this video I took of you?"

00:18:57 Amara Andrew

-huh.

00:18:58 Jeff Sarris

So, fast forward to last Thursday,

00:19:01 Amara Andrew

Yes.

00:19:02 Jeff Sarris

And I had something planned for the evening. However, we're on the beach Thursday morning,

00:19:11 Amara Andrew

-huh.

00:19:12 Jeff Sarris

Our first day here in Miami, like literally 10 minutes on the beach at the very most.

00:19:18 Amara Andrew

And we were in a spot around a whole event that just finished. There were all it was all the fencing, so we were at a spot where not a lot of people were.

00:19:26 Jeff Sarris

And we're just sitting there and we roll over and we're facing away from the ocean, and then a guy's walking straight towards us from the distance, and I recognized that he was just sitting to our left, but clearly he left and he was coming back. He was walking directly towards us. And he walks all the way up, and then what does he say?

00:19:46 Amara Andrew

And my first thought was like, "Oh God, what do you want?" 'Cause like you do have people on the beach be like, "Hey, do you want whatever?"

00:19:51 Jeff Sarris

And we live in Chicago, so we're used to that.

00:19:53 Amara Andrew

Well, yeah, I'm just used to just being like, "What?" So, then he comes up and he's like, "Hey, excuse me, " He also had an accent. I'm not going to be offensive to Germans everywhere.

00:20:03 Jeff Sarris

Oh yeah, he's European, yeah, yeah, yeah.

00:20:04 Amara Andrew

Just from his name, I'm 100% sure he was German. He had a great tan, though.

00:20:09 Jeff Sarris

Haha!

00:20:10 Amara Andrew

Though. He had a great tan.

00:20:13 Jeff Sarris

Haha!

00:20:13 Amara Andrew

'cause you don't think of Germans as being tan, but he had a great tan.

00:20:16 Jeff Sarris

He looked more European, but anyway, yeah.

00:20:18 Amara Andrew

Yeah. So he just comes up and he's just like, "Hey, like I actually I took these photos of you. I don't know if you want them." And I was like, "Holy fucking shit!" And then immediately I'm like, "Oh my God, okay, thank you, best friends forever!"

00:20:33 Jeff Sarris

Well, and you're just like, "You'll never guess, but this happens all over the world now, we can say with Italy."

00:20:39 Amara Andrew

And he's just like, "Oh, well, yeah, you can just you feel the energy, like the good vibes from you guys." I wish I remembered exactly what he said, but it was something like that.

00:20:46 Jeff Sarris

Well, yeah, you said whatever, we wrote it down, and I don't want to grab it right now 'cause I have the camera going on my phone, but

00:20:51 Amara Andrew

But yeah, it was something like you can just see the energy.

00:20:52 Jeff Sarris

It's It's the energy you give.

00:20:54 Amara Andrew

That's what it was.

00:20:55 Jeff Sarris

That's how you said it.

00:20:56 Amara Andrew

Yeah.

00:20:57 Jeff Sarris

And I was just like, "This is crazy. Okay, cool. This is awesome."

00:21:02 Amara Andrew

-huh.

00:21:02 Jeff Sarris

Because

00:21:03 Amara Andrew

Jinx!

00:21:04 Jeff Sarris

Because of all of this, I had a good diversion for the evening.

00:21:10 Amara Andrew

So,

00:21:11 Jeff Sarris

We were going to dinner, 'cause it's your birthday tomorrow,

00:21:15 Amara Andrew

Yes.

00:21:15 Jeff Sarris

But I was like, "We don't want to burn the first day. We want to make sure we have to be out of the sun." So, I'm like, "I planned your birthday dinner on Thursday, the Thursday before, the 26th."

00:21:28 Amara Andrew

Yeah.

00:21:28 Jeff Sarris

So then, we had to be in and we had to like clean up and get ready, 'cause it was going to be a nicer dinner, and I was like, "We should walk along the beach and then go to dinner from there."

00:21:38 Amara Andrew

And I was a little concerned, 'cause a few times you were like, "Do we have to go on the beach?" Well, I was like, "How about we just go after dinner?" 'cause like

00:21:48 Jeff Sarris

Well, you didn't even You didn't lead with that, you kept saying, "Unless we have to go," And I was like, "I feel like she's onto me," and then

00:21:54 Amara Andrew

I literally had no idea. I just meant like unless we have to go, like you really 'cause you did a good job playing it off like I had no idea what was going on, which you're going to hear what was going on in a minute, but

00:22:03 Jeff Sarris

Well, yeah, you said, "Do we have to?" and I was like, "We don't have to, but I'd like to." I think it'd be nice to walk along the beach. We didn't get to yesterday, because the day that we landed, we walked on the sand, but on the other side of the fencing

00:22:12 Amara Andrew

Yeah.

00:22:12 Jeff Sarris

That was there for the event, because we were very hungry, so we were just like, "Let's get some grounding, get our feet in the sand."

00:22:21 Amara Andrew

Yeah, so that was a good diversion, so then I was just like, "Okay, fine. He wants more beach time, and like the sun isn't as intense 'cause we're trying to not damage our skin," so I was like, "Okay, fine, whatever." But I was like, "I don't want to have like sandy feet and messed up hair," especially 'cause we're going

00:22:35 Jeff Sarris

And your hair was perfect.

00:22:38 Amara Andrew

I know.

00:22:38 Jeff Sarris

Your hair's perfect.

00:22:40 Amara Andrew

Especially 'cause we're going to a nice restaurant, or so I thought. I mean we did, but

00:22:43 Jeff Sarris

And we were, yeah.

00:22:44 Amara Andrew

We were.

00:22:45 Jeff Sarris

But then, we're walking along the beach, we walk around the fencing and get onto the shoreline, and we're walking just for a little bit. I actually had the 360 camera, so we could get us in space 'cause we love being here, and like have us

00:23:00 Amara Andrew

Film.

00:23:01 Jeff Sarris

Filmed.

00:23:01 Amara Andrew

Yeah, like none of it felt out of the ordinary at all. Like I literally had no idea.

00:23:06 Jeff Sarris

And then in the distance, there's someone like with a camera and she takes our photo, and then when we get up there, she's like, "Oh, I don't want to bother you, but I was just I'm testing out my new lens and I took this photo of you guys. Would you mind if I just take another one if I like if I take a photo of you in front of the ocean?"

00:23:23 Amara Andrew

So then I was like, "Yeah, sure, why not?" So then

00:23:25 Jeff Sarris

-huh, and I can only imagine the look on my face when I'm like listening to her.

00:23:28 Amara Andrew

We pose next to each other. I cannot wait to look back at that footage.

00:23:31 Jeff Sarris

From then, yeah, second camera.

00:23:33 Amara Andrew

Yeah, so then we pose together in front of the ocean, and then she's like, "Okay, great. Now look at each other." So then I was like,

00:23:38 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, face each other.

00:23:39 Amara Andrew

Okay. And I was like,

00:23:41 Jeff Sarris

And then, what happened when you looked at me?

00:23:43 Amara Andrew

I was just like, "Are you okay?" 'cause his eyes were watering like no other, and I was like, "Did something happen? Like what's wrong?"

00:23:50 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, you're just like Well, because you're very sweet, so you're like, "Oh my gosh, what happened? What's wrong?"

00:23:55 Amara Andrew

Well, yeah, 'cause I just I panicked, 'cause I was like you he never cries, like only very few times I've seen him cry. But I was just like, "Are you okay? Like what's wrong?"

00:24:05 Jeff Sarris

And then I just said three words. I was like, "10 years ago,"

00:24:08 Amara Andrew

And I was like,

00:24:09 Jeff Sarris

And then you started,

00:24:10 Amara Andrew

Ugly crying. Also for the record, I never put mascara on my bottom lashes.

00:24:17 Jeff Sarris

I love that you brought this up to everyone. It's so funny to me.

00:24:19 Amara Andrew

Because it was just a fucking mess, like I normally wear waterproof mascara because my eyes just water, and not waterproof mascara and on the bottom lashes, and it was just like I could I don't even know what you saw, but

00:24:34 Jeff Sarris

Oh, it was sweet, and then you're just like, "Oh, my sweetie."

00:24:36 Amara Andrew

Yeah.

00:24:37 Jeff Sarris

So then I said what I wanted to say,

00:24:38 Amara Andrew

'Cause I like I realized then, Took fucking long enough, what was happening, and I'm like shaking like this, and I was like, "Is this what I think it is?" and I was like, "Are you fucking with me?" And then he like gets down on his knee, and like he said like a really nice, whole proposal.

00:24:54 Jeff Sarris

Yeah. Well, and it's funny, because I'm like, "I could say it," but no, that's like just for us.

00:24:58 Amara Andrew

Yeah, that's why I'm not telling anybody. I don't know, I just want it for us. But yeah, then he gets down on one knee, and I'm like, "This really is happening!" And it felt so surreal, like 'cause we've talked about it now.

Before we never wanted to get

00:25:13 Jeff Sarris

So, that was the interesting Not interesting thing, but like when we met, neither of us, we were just like, "We're good," like that's not We weren't ever going to get married.

00:25:22 Amara Andrew

No.

00:25:23 Jeff Sarris

We never even said We never actually said what happened.

00:25:26 Amara Andrew

What do you mean?

00:25:27 Jeff Sarris

So, I got on a knee.

00:25:29 Amara Andrew

Oh, yeah. So, you got down on one knee,

00:25:31 Jeff Sarris

And then

00:25:32 Amara Andrew

And then you just asked

00:25:34 Jeff Sarris

If you would be mine forever.

00:25:35 Amara Andrew

If I would be yours forever.

00:25:36 Jeff Sarris

And she said, "Yes."

00:25:37 Amara Andrew

I said, Holy shit!" I was like, "Oh my God! Oh my God!"

00:25:43 Jeff Sarris

And then you're like,

00:25:44 Amara Andrew

That's the most beautiful ring I've ever seen in my entire life. If you want to see it, go to my socials or his socials. Like it's so beautiful.

It's perfect clarity, perfect cut, perfect color, like literally everything is perfect.

00:25:57 Jeff Sarris

It's so weird, it feels like it glows in the dark, but

00:25:59 Amara Andrew

It's I swear to God, I've never seen a like a diamond this beautiful before, and like the ring, the actual band is a knife edge.

00:26:08 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, knife edge.

00:26:09 Amara Andrew

Knife edge, so you can fit diamonds not only on the front side, but also on the back side, so it has diamonds everywhere.

00:26:15 Jeff Sarris

So yeah, it's just a very unique. It had to be perfect and not common.

00:26:21 Amara Andrew

Well, yeah, I love that it's unique. Like I never thought of myself as a diamond gal, but I'm definitely a diamond dandy now.

00:26:27 Jeff Sarris

Haha!

00:26:28 Amara Andrew

But we

00:26:29 Jeff Sarris

So, we never thought about

00:26:31 Amara Andrew

So, we're engaged!

00:26:32 Jeff Sarris

Yeah.

00:26:34 Amara Andrew

Haha!

00:26:35 Jeff Sarris

We never When we met, we weren't going to get married or anything.

00:26:38 Amara Andrew

No, ever.

00:26:39 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, 'cause it was like neither of us, it didn't matter, 'cause being together was everything.

00:26:43 Amara Andrew

Exactly.

00:26:44 Jeff Sarris

So then I had a little thing when I asked you to move in that I did, that was like a fun little

00:26:47 Amara Andrew

It was so cool. It was like a Cryptex, is that what it's called?

00:26:50 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, Cryptex.

00:26:51 Amara Andrew

Yeah, where he had in the town that we met, he had like a whole little scavenger hunt, which was so cool. So, he had little envelopes, and then each one had a clue to different places that like meant something to us. So then finally

00:27:04 Jeff Sarris

And this is like years ago. This is eight years ago.

00:27:07 Amara Andrew

Yeah, this is back in December 2018. So then yeah, each part of those clues made up a letter on the Cryptex, 'cause that's like if you've ever seen The Da Vinci Code, it's like it makes It's one word is like the key to opening it, and then the side opens, and then yeah, then he asked me to move in, which is so cute. So, we thought that was just going to be the only thing.

00:27:28 Jeff Sarris

Well, yeah, so I wanted that to be really special, and then you moved in. And then like slowly with time, we're like, "Well,"

00:27:35 Amara Andrew

Well, yeah, it was mostly me.

00:27:37 Jeff Sarris

I mean there is something sweet about getting hitched up.

00:27:41 Amara Andrew

Well, yeah, and especially just 'cause it's like it's us forever, and then I was like, I feel like I'm changing my tune,

00:27:46 Jeff Sarris

Well yeah, and there's never been a question.

00:27:48 Amara Andrew

-huh, well, so it's been a while. Yeah.

00:27:50 Jeff Sarris

So, what would you normally do with your hand?

00:27:52 Amara Andrew

I guess, sparkle, sparkle!

00:27:54 Jeff Sarris

Haha!

00:27:55 Amara Andrew

So be like, it's looking a little not sparkly over here.

00:27:59 Jeff Sarris

Haha!

00:27:59 Amara Andrew

But yeah, I can't do it anymore.

00:28:01 Jeff Sarris

It was hard though, because then we don't We are Okay.

00:28:06 Amara Andrew

We're together 99% of the time.

00:28:08 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, if you don't actually know us,

00:28:09 Amara Andrew

Only pooping and showering.

00:28:11 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, but we're still in the same house.

00:28:12 Amara Andrew

Yeah.

00:28:13 Jeff Sarris

I do mine in the backyard, but other than that, I just have a nice pile going.

00:28:17 Amara Andrew

Haha! Yeah, it's great. It's good for organic mulch.

00:28:20 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, we're together 100% of the time, like 100%. So, keeping any secret, making any surprise, also with her, because she is very perceptive, where we'll we'll watch a movie that you should not be able to figure out, and we're two minutes in and she figures out the like answer. So, I'm like, "Just don't tell me what your thought is yet,"

00:28:38 Amara Andrew

Haha!

00:28:38 Jeff Sarris

'cause I just want to enjoy the movie.

00:28:40 Amara Andrew

Well, and if you've ever tried to plan anything, I feel like I normally have an idea of what it is.

00:28:44 Jeff Sarris

Yes.

00:28:45 Amara Andrew

But the move-in, I didn't see coming. I think I saw it coming a little bit more, but not as much. This, I 110% did not see coming.

Like, you didn't act weird.

00:28:57 Jeff Sarris

And I was so happy that I was able to sneak it by.

00:29:01 Amara Andrew

But I think, too, full roundabout to the beginning of the show,

00:29:04 Jeff Sarris

Oh, yeah.

00:29:04 Amara Andrew

I've just tried to be more in the moment and just not 'cause I'll live 20 years in the future and be like, "Well, I should be doing this, or I should be doing that, and I'm not doing enough, and I need to do this," and like stressing myself out, and we've said this entire trip before this, even, was the most calm, best time we've had here, I think by far, forever.

00:29:25 Jeff Sarris

Well, also leading up to it.

00:29:27 Amara Andrew

And we've come to Miami a million times, like too many times. Not too many, but a lot.

00:29:30 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, a lot of people know us for going to Miami.

00:29:33 Amara Andrew

Yeah, like if you think of us, you associate us with Miami.

00:29:36 Jeff Sarris

Well, here's Here's one quick little fun tidbit. The best gluten-free pizza on the planet is here in Miami Beach. It's at La Leggenda.

00:29:43 Amara Andrew

So good!

00:29:44 Jeff Sarris

And as soon as you posted our photos of this, one of the first people to engage with it was La Leggenda!

00:29:52 Amara Andrew

Haha! We love La Leggenda.

00:29:55 Jeff Sarris

Because like they're so nice and like the sort of the guy from there is so nice, we always see him and talk to him.

00:30:02 Amara Andrew

We've gotten to know them a little bit.

00:30:04 Jeff Sarris

We almost have more friends We have more friends in Miami Beach than we do where we live.

00:30:07 Amara Andrew

Every Oh, 100%!

00:30:08 Jeff Sarris

Which is funny.

00:30:09 Amara Andrew

Every single restaurant and place we go to that we just frequent, they come up, they're like, "Hi, how are you?" and give us kisses and hugs. It's like we're family, basically.

00:30:17 Jeff Sarris

Kisses, who kissed you?

00:30:18 Amara Andrew

Oh no, just like the European kiss.

00:30:20 Jeff Sarris

I don't kiss no one.

00:30:21 Amara Andrew

And then kissed on the lips with the one lady. Haha!

00:30:23 Jeff Sarris

Haha!

00:30:24 Amara Andrew

You didn't see that?

00:30:25 Jeff Sarris

Oh, no.

00:30:26 Amara Andrew

She's really excited to see me.

00:30:28 Jeff Sarris

.

00:30:28 Amara Andrew

But no, just like the

00:30:31 Jeff Sarris

Well, yeah.

00:30:31 Amara Andrew

On the cheek, like a friend kiss.

00:30:33 Jeff Sarris

But again, full circle, believing that the world is conspiring to make us a success.

00:30:39 Amara Andrew

Yeah.

00:30:39 Jeff Sarris

And like I think because here, like when we're when we're feeling our best is when everything is the best.

00:30:47 Amara Andrew

-huh.

00:30:47 Jeff Sarris

It's very interesting.

00:30:49 Amara Andrew

Yeah.

00:30:49 Jeff Sarris

And I think that there is there is a magic to that. And like how that I cannot believe that the morning of the so, obviously I didn't say it, we didn't say it, but I had the photographer hired for the evening.

00:31:02 Amara Andrew

Yeah. That was an actual person.

00:31:03 Jeff Sarris

That was not a random person. It should be obvious, we didn't explicitly say it.

00:31:08 Amara Andrew

Oh, and that's what you said in the proposal.

00:31:11 Jeff Sarris

Yeah.

00:31:11 Amara Andrew

You said, "And it's not on Like she's here on purpose."

00:31:14 Jeff Sarris

-huh, that was just part of it, but

00:31:15 Amara Andrew

But the guy earlier was definitely just random.

00:31:18 Jeff Sarris

Like, that was crazy, that makes no sense. No, zero sense that it happened again, but

00:31:23 Amara Andrew

Yeah.

00:31:24 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, so, oh, and if you want to see all the photos, go to whatismaking.com/strangers, and the photo the photos from the photo from the guy and from the proposal aren't up there yet, but they will be soon.

00:31:36 Amara Andrew

Yeah. That's so crazy.

00:31:38 Jeff Sarris

But yeah, so that's why we're here in Miami. We're also here for your birthday. Tomorrow is your birthday.

00:31:42 Amara Andrew

Well, yeah, and it was perfect that you had my birthday as sort of a cushion of sorts. So, like it's

00:31:47 Jeff Sarris

Well, yeah, to like have cover.

00:31:49 Amara Andrew

Yeah, so maybe that's even why, too, like if you were acting weird, I was like, "Oh, he has like something planned for my birthday." Didn't realize I was going to be coming away with the best gift ever! You!

00:31:58 Jeff Sarris

Haha! Oh good.

00:32:00 Amara Andrew

And the ring.

00:32:00 Jeff Sarris

I was just like

00:32:02 Amara Andrew

Haha! It's like It's seriously stupid shiny. Can't stop looking at it.

Anyway.

00:32:07 Jeff Sarris

But yeah, just sort of believing that the world is out to get us into a better world into a better us. It really I feel like it just works. Like there's been times where I've definitely spiraled, too, but my the me at my core has been it always works out.

00:32:24 Amara Andrew

Oh yeah, that's you. That's your default setting.

00:32:27 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, or at least somehow where I've gotten to.

00:32:29 Amara Andrew

Yeah, no, that is definitely your default.

00:32:31 Jeff Sarris

When I feel that, it literally does work out. And like there's a lot of it that it's action, too. It's not it's not that it's going to work out, let me lay on the couch all day for a month and wait for it to work out.

It's, "Oh, it's going to work out, let me just see which of the stepping stones we're going to follow."

00:32:51 Amara Andrew

Yeah.

00:32:51 Jeff Sarris

And it will work out.

00:32:52 Amara Andrew

Something I was thinking about when I was waiting for you this morning was

00:32:57 Jeff Sarris

'Cause I slept a bit later than sweetie.

00:33:00 Amara Andrew

Yeah, but that's good. So, yeah, I just had my matcha, I sat on the patio. It was quite lovely, blue lavender, check it out.

00:33:05 Jeff Sarris

Matcha!

00:33:07 Amara Andrew

The thing that I was thinking about was just like not having the feeling of, "Well, I deserve this," 'cause I feel like I've also sort of gotten trapped in that thought.

00:33:19 Jeff Sarris

I work so hard, therefore.

00:33:21 Amara Andrew

Yeah, like, "Well, no, I should have this, or I should have people coming to me being like, 'Hey, I need to work with you, blah,'" like that is very It is something that I've had lately, just that like, "Well, no, I work hard, so I should buy myself this thing, or do this, or do that, or expect this." And having the expectations, like we've talked about, isn't good, because you're setting yourself up for failure, and it's just not realistic, and it's not beneficial, and it doesn't actually lead to any sort of growth or positivity.

It's just expecting something, and I want to make sure I'm always grateful for absolutely nothing,

00:34:02 Jeff Sarris

Haha!

00:34:03 Amara Andrew

And not expecting

00:34:05 Jeff Sarris

I want to be sure I'm grateful for absolutely nothing!

00:34:08 Amara Andrew

Anything.

00:34:08 Jeff Sarris

It is funny, because if you only take those words, it sounds negative.

00:34:10 Amara Andrew

Grateful for nothing! Yeah, not needing anything to be grateful for in order to feel gratitude. Purely grateful, that's it.

Just grateful for whatever, anything, nothing, whatever, but then not expecting that, "Well, I've done this, so I should have this," like any sort of outcome. Both of those things I want to try to remember as much as possible, but it's a practice, like it's not going to be perfect, it's not always going to be 100% at the top of my mind, but I meant to say that to you earlier, but that like popped into my head this morning as I was just sitting there.

I was like, "Yeah, why am I like expecting certain things? Like no, just work harder and make things happen," which is then why I was thinking about Hiveway, and I have so many things to fill you in on, but anyway, after this trip.

00:34:59 Jeff Sarris

Oh, yeah, after this trip.

00:35:00 Amara Andrew

We'll fill you in, too, at some point.

00:35:01 Jeff Sarris

After this trip, we're excited.

00:35:02 Amara Andrew

Definitely before July.

00:35:03 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, we're actually excited to be back later this week, because

00:35:06 Amara Andrew

Get to work!

00:35:07 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, then we're getting right back to building all these things we're working on, which is a lot of fun.

00:35:09 Amara Andrew

And I think it's going to be even I say it every single time, but I genuinely think it's going to be even better, even better, like I've had an unlock.

00:35:17 Jeff Sarris

Well yeah, there's so much opportunity right now, and it's because we believe there's opportunity, and suddenly it all showed up.

00:35:23 Amara Andrew

Yeah. Haha! Oh my god!

I was like, "!"

00:35:26 Jeff Sarris

Where's that doggy again?

00:35:27 Amara Andrew

Haha! We got to go find the doggy, so

00:35:30 Jeff Sarris

Haha!

00:35:30 Amara Andrew

Yeah, we got to go grab lunch.

00:35:32 Jeff Sarris

-huh, but yeah, pronoia, it's it's a thing.

00:35:36 Amara Andrew

Yep. Just like emails.

00:35:38 Jeff Sarris

Haha! But, yeah, so I think that's it for today.

00:35:42 Amara Andrew

Yes.

00:35:42 Jeff Sarris

Oh, 36 minutes. Wow!

00:35:44 Amara Andrew

Cool!

00:35:45 Jeff Sarris

A full episode.

00:35:46 Amara Andrew

Yeah. Full transparency, we tried to record this last night and it was too much going on.

00:35:51 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, we were sitting, yeah, it was a whole thing.

00:35:52 Amara Andrew

I just want to give a little bit behind-the-scenes secret sauce. We did try recording this last night to have it out this morning, but

00:35:58 Jeff Sarris

There was music the moment we sat outside, the music kicked on really loud. There was too much.

00:36:02 Amara Andrew

And the moment we hit record, the music started, and then I just got so distracted and we were just I felt like I was rambling.

00:36:08 Jeff Sarris

Well yeah, but this is a much better episode.

00:36:09 Amara Andrew

Yes, so

00:36:10 Jeff Sarris

So yeah, so thanks for

00:36:11 Amara Andrew

So, if you need to re-record things, just do it and you'll feel so much better, because I feel so much better just waiting, even if it's a little bit delayed, so to speak.

00:36:19 Jeff Sarris

Oh, yeah. And we got to share our story.

00:36:21 Amara Andrew

Yeah, we're engaged! We're going to be Mr. And Mrs.!

That's crazy!

00:36:27 Jeff Sarris

All right, so

00:36:28 Amara Andrew

I was like, "Where are you going?" You're like, "I'm finding the doggy."

00:36:31 Jeff Sarris

We need to get our thumbnail photo at the end.

00:36:34 Amara Andrew

Okay.

00:36:34 Jeff Sarris

Just however you want to do it, but thanks for tuning in, and we'll see you next time.

00:36:37 Amara Andrew

Bye!
