Audio Setup and Technical Issues in Riverside

00:00:00 Jeff Sarris

Hello. Welcome back to this very serious episode of What is MAVEN? Just kidding.

This week on the episode, podcast, this week on this week's Fuck. It was like make this nice and quick and simple and I fucked it up. Anyway.

00:00:18 Amara Andrew

It's a one more reason why.

00:00:19 Jeff Sarris

Yes, I'm getting to it. This week on the podcast, we're talking about one more reason why you should not use trending audio on your social media clips. Don't fucking do it, and here's why.

We're also talking about the value of creating your own authentic content and wherever else this conversation leads. And Jeff has an interesting hypothetical, which I'm very curious about.

00:00:34 Amara Andrew

Yeah, hypothetically speaking. Yeah, it's kind of crazy. But anyway, let's just get started.

And then we stand here in silence, sit here in silence while the music goes.

00:00:45 Jeff Sarris

We're standing?

00:00:46 Amara Andrew

I am standing. Wow. Wait, how tall are you?

You're a lot shorter than I thought. So, the one thing is doing the music live on the show here through Riverside. I can't like fade it out, so it's going to pop.

00:00:59 Jeff Sarris

Really? You can't?

00:01:00 Amara Andrew

Because I have the music way too loud in there, so it was blowing out our ears.

00:01:06 Jeff Sarris

What? Huh? I can't hear you.

00:01:09 Amara Andrew

Oh, I think I just thought of an option that I should have done instead. That would have made sense. Probably if I just

00:01:15 Jeff Sarris

Turned down the volume?

00:01:16 Amara Andrew

Turned down the volume on my computer instead of just in Riverside.

00:01:18 Jeff Sarris

What? Look at you. This episode is off to a fucking fantastic start.

00:01:25 Amara Andrew

Okay, so what's the deal with trending audio?

00:01:27 Jeff Sarris

What's the dealio, dealio? What's the dealio? What's your favorite new song?

If you know the name of the artist, I just found that song, and I am obsessed with it. And, like, their whole catalog. I don't know, I love it.

Anyway, it's very much up my speed alley.

00:01:46 Amara Andrew

Up your Up your speed alley?

00:01:47 Jeff Sarris

My speed alley. How are you?

00:01:49 Amara Andrew

I'm good.

00:01:50 Jeff Sarris

Good.

00:01:50 Amara Andrew

Hello.

00:01:51 Jeff Sarris

Hello.

00:01:51 Amara Andrew

Where have you been? I haven't seen you in minutes.

00:01:53 Jeff Sarris

I know, it's been

00:01:54 Amara Andrew

Actually, I've literally been staring at you this whole time.

Haunted Houses Versus Forest Survival Debates

00:01:57 Jeff Sarris

I don't believe you. I actually wanted to start with a would you rather, 'cause I'm actually very curious how you would answer this, 'cause I don't know. Would you rather spend a week in the forest or a night in a real haunted house?

00:02:16 Amara Andrew

Okay, would I rather spend a summer on the beach or

00:02:23 Jeff Sarris

I'm so glad you listen to me all the time.

00:02:26 Amara Andrew

Did you say a week in the forest?

00:02:28 Jeff Sarris

Yes.

00:02:28 Amara Andrew

Yeah, or

00:02:29 Jeff Sarris

A week in a forest or a night in a real haunted house?

00:02:36 Amara Andrew

See, the haunted house actually sounds fun. I don't know, the vibe of a haunted house I like.

00:02:46 Jeff Sarris

Haunted?

00:02:46 Amara Andrew

I don't Wanted? Did I say wanted? A haunted house.

00:02:51 Jeff Sarris

Hey, yo, it's a fucking haunted house!

00:02:53 Amara Andrew

I'm walking over here! I'm haunted over here! Ay, ay, ay.

I am not like awake yet for this, but we're recording, so here we go.

00:03:02 Jeff Sarris

Hey, you just woke up 10 minutes ago.

00:03:03 Amara Andrew

No, I've been up for a little bit, but I'm just not awake today. I'm a little sleepy. So wait, what?

So, a forest?

00:03:11 Jeff Sarris

You can't see the forest for the trees. On your knees! Okay,

00:03:22 Amara Andrew

I don't know with the forest. The forest sounds kind of blah.

00:03:26 Jeff Sarris

It's a whole week in a forest.

00:03:27 Amara Andrew

Yeah. Is that good?

00:03:30 Jeff Sarris

I guess it's not specified if you're in a tent or if you're glamping.

00:03:33 Amara Andrew

Like, am I just Yeah. It's like very open-ended. Or am I in a treehouse?

If it's a treehouse in a forest, that's what I'm choosing.

00:03:39 Jeff Sarris

That'd be fucking sick.

00:03:41 Amara Andrew

But if we're doing a week in a forest, presuming it's Naked and Afraid, and I'm just dropped in a forest for a week, or an evening in a haunted house Naked and Afraid. I think, well, not naked, but I think I would choose the haunted house, actually.

00:03:59 Jeff Sarris

Naked and afraid in a haunted house?

00:04:02 Amara Andrew

Yeah.

00:04:03 Jeff Sarris

I mean, that sounds like a romantic evening to me.

00:04:05 Amara Andrew

Naked and afraid in a haunted house.

00:04:08 Jeff Sarris

That's the name of this episode.

00:04:13 Amara Andrew

Just the silent laughter.

00:04:18 Jeff Sarris

I like Naked and Afraid in a Haunted House. It's like, what the fuck happened in there?

00:04:22 Amara Andrew

I think that'd be interesting.

00:04:24 Jeff Sarris

I like it.

00:04:25 Amara Andrew

Yeah.

00:04:25 Jeff Sarris

Cool.

00:04:25 Amara Andrew

And I don't like being scared, necessarily. It's just I like the vibe.

00:04:28 Jeff Sarris

I scared the shit out of you yesterday.

00:04:31 Amara Andrew

Oh, and I wanted to actually show, that was the other thing, and what may be my new favorite camera.

00:04:38 Jeff Sarris

It's very fun. I should have bought one.

00:04:39 Amara Andrew

So, you talk for a second, I'm going to go grab it.

00:04:41 Jeff Sarris

So, once upon a time, there was a little boy, and his name was Sally Bob. This is just like Johnny Cash, a boy named Sue. This is weird.

Hi, how are you? I hope you're doing well. Hurry the fuck up!

No. It's so funny because my other podcast is me just talking to a camera for like an hour. I need to record that, by the way.

My hair is all frizzy. You didn't fucking tell me!

00:05:03 Amara Andrew

You could be talking about the show and what we're doing, if you wanted to.

00:05:08 Jeff Sarris

No, I want to connect with you.

00:05:10 Amara Andrew

So, what's the hypothetical for you? What is the answer? Not what's the hypothetical.

Would you choose a week

00:05:17 Jeff Sarris

Do I have to be naked and afraid?

00:05:19 Amara Andrew

A week

00:05:21 Jeff Sarris

I do like no clothes, but

00:05:22 Amara Andrew

A week in a haunted forest?

00:05:24 Jeff Sarris

Ooh!

00:05:25 Amara Andrew

Or an evening in a house?

00:05:29 Jeff Sarris

Wow. Yeah, you never let me spend the evenings in the house. I have my own little doggy house in the I sleep in the shed in the back.

00:05:40 Amara Andrew

Yeah, you clean up well.

00:05:41 Jeff Sarris

Actually, that would be a nice little tiny home. But a hunt Does it have to be a haunted forest? 'Cause that actually sounds terrifying.

And a whole week! The Blair Witch Project was only like 48 hours.

00:05:58 Amara Andrew

Think about all the content.

Video Production Standards and DJI Osmo Cameras

00:59:59 Jeff Sarris

That is true. If I had your fun little do-dad, the camera. The camera.

Oh, heavens me. Oh god, sorry if you're listening or watching this, 'cause this is not off to a great start.

00:06:13 Amara Andrew

No, this is a great start. Which would you choose? A week in a haunted forest or one evening in a house?

00:06:21 Jeff Sarris

You know, it'd be nice to shower and shit in a toilet instead of a hole in the ground.. Seriously?

00:06:30 Amara Andrew

Yeah.

00:06:33 Jeff Sarris

I'm not going to choose a fucking haunted forest. That is terrifying. A haunted house would be way more fun.

00:06:39 Amara Andrew

Why?

00:06:40 Jeff Sarris

Because it's a fucking house! No, a forest is scary as fuck. Even in normal like there's a forest that I like to walk around nearby where we live, and that at night would scare the fuck out of me.

But, like, I know it all by heart 'cause I walk there so often. But like that would terrify me.

00:06:58 Amara Andrew

Tears are falling from laughing.

00:06:59 Jeff Sarris

So, I can only imagine a haunted forest? Fuck no! No!

I'd sleep in a house! I'd have a nice evening in a house.

00:07:11 Amara Andrew

Actually, okay. An evening in a haunted forest

00:07:14 Jeff Sarris

No.

00:07:15 Amara Andrew

Or

00:07:16 Jeff Sarris

No.

00:07:16 Amara Andrew

An evening naked and afraid in a hostel?

00:07:22 Jeff Sarris

Oh, then haunted forest, 100%. I never want to be in a hostel, ever.

00:07:27 Amara Andrew

I didn't mean to like make this Naked and Afraid, but

00:07:28 Jeff Sarris

Ever since that movie Hostel, I watched it when whenever it came out, so I was like five or whatever. I wasn't that young, but I was young enough. You're blinking over there.

I'm trying to figure out where to put my headphones. But yeah, ever since that movie, I was like, "Absolutely not. I'm not staying in a fucking hostel."

00:07:46 Amara Andrew

Yeah, that's fine.

00:07:47 Jeff Sarris

It was very scary.

00:07:48 Amara Andrew

Yeah, my experience wasn't awesome. It wasn't scary, but it was like, bleh.

00:07:51 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, they handed you a loaf of bread, and they're like, "Enjoy your breakfast."

00:07:55 Amara Andrew

Yeah, the breakfast was, yeah, very, very worn and used plastic cups.

00:08:00 Jeff Sarris

I thought you were going to say bread! It's like, ooh!

00:08:04 Amara Andrew

Plastic cups with hot, hot water for tea, which I'm like those are leaching a lot of chemicals, 'cause those cups were worn. And then, yeah, there was just a loaf of bread. It's like, "Here, grab your bread and put some jam on it if you want." Like that's a good breakfast?

00:08:20 Jeff Sarris

I mean, that sounds like a B&B if you ask me.

00:08:22 Amara Andrew

But more than that, it was the, 36 people in a room. The bunks were they three or four high? I'm forgetting now.

00:08:28 Jeff Sarris

That feels like a recipe for disaster.

00:08:33 Amara Andrew

It was different.

00:08:35 Jeff Sarris

I would rather spend money if I didn't have it to get my own private hotel room in like the shittiest hotel.

00:08:41 Amara Andrew

Now, it was the experience 'cause we wanted to try it. It was 2010.

00:08:45 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, but how many friends did you make?

00:08:46 Amara Andrew

Well, zero, but

00:08:48 Jeff Sarris

Exactly. And how uncomfortable were you?

00:08:49 Amara Andrew

That's how I operate. You would make all the friends.

00:08:52 Jeff Sarris

Well, I would have a lot of fun, not gonna lie. Like I know I would make it a fucking party, but

00:08:56 Amara Andrew

And every hostel's different because a diff- another one was like

00:08:58 Jeff Sarris

I'm staying at a hostel in Italy, is that what you're saying?

00:09:02 Amara Andrew

But another one in actually in Pisa, there was a hostel that was two people in the room.

00:09:08 Jeff Sarris

Hey!

00:09:10 Amara Andrew

So, yeah, we have a lot of travel coming up. So, hostel aside, we're not going to hostels or anything, but we are hitting the road in a couple days. We've We've been home for how many days?

How many days have we been home?

00:09:23 Jeff Sarris

We have been home for exactly 22 days, and not that I'm counting or anything. I need to get the fuck out of here.

00:09:30 Amara Andrew

That's When you say 22, it sounds like a lot. When you say 3 weeks, when you say 3 weeks, it doesn't sound like as much as it feels like. Right?

00:09:37 Jeff Sarris

It's felt like a very long time.

00:09:38 Amara Andrew

'Cause we've been on the road a lot filming with people.

00:09:41 Jeff Sarris

Well, yeah, like every week, which has been so fun. And it's like just been in isolated, well, no, we've seen people, but I don't know, it's different. It's like a little party when we travel.

00:09:50 Amara Andrew

Oh, yeah. Well, and so we're leaving Saturday to go to Orlando.

00:09:54 Jeff Sarris

Orlando!

00:09:55 Amara Andrew

And there are there's an event there. We're doing a MAVEN VIP experience with a bunch of people. We have three separate days of VIP experience.

00:10:04 Jeff Sarris

VIP people?

00:10:05 Amara Andrew

VIP people. We're bringing a board game or two, so we might get to play our favorite board game.

00:10:10 Jeff Sarris

If you're watching this, we're playing board games.

00:10:12 Amara Andrew

Well, one specifically, hopefully, with a little group. But,

00:10:15 Jeff Sarris

It'd be so fun. If you fucking throw me under the bus, I'm going to be so mad.

00:10:19 Amara Andrew

Hey, it's a It's The Resistance. Anyone who's played The Resistance knows how great it is.

00:10:23 Jeff Sarris

He's a dirty player.

00:10:25 Amara Andrew

I'm always good. Did you hear my stomach?

00:10:29 Jeff Sarris

Yeah.

00:10:31 Amara Andrew

So, we're doing that, and then where are we going?

00:10:34 Jeff Sarris

Miami! We're going with a couple friends, which is going to be really fun. I'm very excited.

We're going to do all the things.

00:10:38 Amara Andrew

Yeah, for someone's 31st birthday, that we're going to Miami.

00:10:42 Jeff Sarris

Oh, shit, you're turning 31 also?

00:10:44 Amara Andrew

Hey, what can I say?

00:10:45 Jeff Sarris

What?!

00:10:46 Amara Andrew

Yeah, now officially going to be in my 30s. I think when you're 30, you're in your 30s.

00:10:52 Jeff Sarris

Nope.

00:10:52 Amara Andrew

30.

00:10:53 Jeff Sarris

Nope.

00:10:53 Amara Andrew

'Cause when you're zero, you're in your ones, as we always say. It's pretty common.

00:10:57 Jeff Sarris

In my zeroes.

00:10:58 Amara Andrew

Yeah.

00:10:59 Jeff Sarris

Ones and zeroes. That is me.

00:11:02 Amara Andrew

But yeah, so we're doing that, and then we're home for what, three days, and then we hit the East Coast.

00:11:06 Jeff Sarris

Five days.

00:11:07 Amara Andrew

Five days, and then we go to Philly, and

00:11:09 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, then we do Philly. We have a couple MAVEN Top Bananas if and to find out what that is, if for some reason you're listening to this and you don't know, you can go to whatismaven.com, and right on the homepage, you can see everything we do with real

I sniffed into the mic and then I was like, "I should sniff over here."

00:11:25 Amara Andrew

But, whatismaven.com, you can see everything we do with real estate agents. We fly out to them, film with them for a day or two and create 3 months of content, and then

00:11:35 Jeff Sarris

Print your tits off, and then fly home.

00:11:37 Amara Andrew

Yeah, and then see them again 3 months later.

00:11:39 Jeff Sarris

Yay!

00:11:40 Amara Andrew

But, yeah, so we're doing that. We're going to Philadelphia. We're going to, like, outside of Philadelphia.

00:11:44 Jeff Sarris

Yeah.

00:11:44 Amara Andrew

And then we're going to another outside of Philadelphia MAVEN, and then

00:11:49 Jeff Sarris

Toledo.

00:11:50 Amara Andrew

Yeah, and then Ohio.

00:11:51 Jeff Sarris

And then Dallas, Houston, Indiana.

00:11:52 Amara Andrew

And we're going I'm saying this like we're not going to record in the next few months, but

00:11:56 Jeff Sarris

Nope.

00:11:56 Amara Andrew

We are on the road. We're on the Well, yeah, we're on the road. Buy your tour posters at whatismaven.com/

00:12:03 Jeff Sarris

Don't. There is no slash.

00:12:06 Amara Andrew

But, yeah. So, today's episode. So, what

00:12:09 Jeff Sarris

What's your hypothetical? I'm dying to know, 'cause you brought this up. Motherfucker.

00:12:12 Amara Andrew

I'll save it for the end. It's It's It's a very personal one.

00:12:18 Jeff Sarris

Ugh!

00:12:18 Amara Andrew

I don't know, like I don't know if it's too heavy.

I don't know.

00:12:22 Jeff Sarris

Well, now I want to know!

00:12:24 Amara Andrew

No, but let me talk about why we're here.

00:12:26 Jeff Sarris

Speaking of heavy.

00:12:28 Amara Andrew

I was I've been thinking. Huh? No, but, so

00:12:34 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, so this came across my desk because you brought it across my desk over there. And you enlightened me, which is hilarious because I spend so much time on TikTok, and I had no idea. Where the fuck are you?

Were in the middle of Hey! The fuck, guy?! This is why I do things by myself!

00:13:03 Amara Andrew

This is our studio. We can run it any way we want. I'm grabbing the chocolate.

00:13:07 Jeff Sarris

Are you going to share?

00:13:08 Amara Andrew

Do you hear my stomach growling?

00:13:09 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, can you shut the fuck up? We need We should have our salads. Kristo would be so proud.

00:13:14 Amara Andrew

Do you want some?

00:13:16 Jeff Sarris

Yeah.

00:13:16 Amara Andrew

Do you?

00:13:17 Jeff Sarris

Yeah.

00:13:17 Amara Andrew

Here, I'll slide I broke a piece off.

00:13:20 Jeff Sarris

Oh, my Christ.

00:13:22 Amara Andrew

In case you're curious, we're in the same room. Ooh!

00:13:25 Jeff Sarris

Oh, shit!

00:13:28 Amara Andrew

Anyway. See, this is why the show exists. We're not here to teach.

00:13:36 Jeff Sarris

Oh.

00:13:36 Amara Andrew

We're here to hang out.

00:13:38 Jeff Sarris

Can you believe I was a teacher? Welcome to class. Anyway.

00:13:46 Amara Andrew

I mean, I was going to chew on this while you explained.

00:13:48 Jeff Sarris

Podcasts 101. Let's eat into the microphone.

00:13:51 Amara Andrew

So, what I came across, what I came across was this.

00:13:53 Jeff Sarris

That's my favorite. I can talk at the same time.

00:13:55 Amara Andrew

I know, but I'll give I'll give you a moment.

00:13:57 Jeff Sarris

Toclate. Toclate? And talk Let's talk about it.

00:14:01 Amara Andrew

Are you crying?

00:14:02 Jeff Sarris

I was before.

00:14:03 Amara Andrew

Aw. 'Cause I was laughing. You make me so sad.

Okay, so

We want to talk about, yeah, trending audio and why we've talked in the past about evergreen content.

00:14:14 Jeff Sarris

Chocolate is also the worst fucking thing to eat on video. I look like I ate a pile of shit.

00:14:21 Amara Andrew

I'm a simple man. But we talk about evergreen content a lot. Evergreen content means that your content you create is

Evergreen. You hear my stomach, because I got the chocolate, so I wouldn't be growling, and you're eating it.

00:14:35 Jeff Sarris

If you're watching and listening to this,

00:14:37 Amara Andrew

Thank you.

00:14:38 Jeff Sarris

Hi.

00:14:39 Amara Andrew

But evergreen content means that it's going to last forever. It's something that we create today.

00:14:44 Jeff Sarris

Like a tree.

00:14:45 Amara Andrew

Yeah, it doesn't matter if you watch it today or listen

00:14:48 Jeff Sarris

Naked and Afraid in your forest.

00:14:51 Amara Andrew

It doesn't matter when you watch or listen, but it applies.

And that's There go your headphones. So much. There's a There's a pile of chocolate that just ejected from her mouth, and it's all over the table.

I think I need to

I need to have a little behind-the-scenes there of all of that.

It smells like chocolate. I can smell the chocolate that has been added to the air.

00:15:40 Jeff Sarris

Oh, I thought it was on a Kleenex! Why did you give me chocolate?! It's your fault!

00:15:55 Amara Andrew

Roll the tape!

00:15:56 Jeff Sarris

No!

00:15:57 Amara Andrew

I brought chocolate.

00:15:58 Jeff Sarris

Full on my belly! I smeared it into my keyboard! Nobody's going to want to work with us, and that makes me sad!

00:16:15 Amara Andrew

Okay, so for anyone listening, I'm sorry.

00:16:20 Jeff Sarris

It's so good!

00:16:21 Amara Andrew

Yeah. Okay.

00:16:24 Jeff Sarris

So, so, what

00:16:37 Amara Andrew

So, this podcast is going great. It is going great. Anyway.

00:16:42 Jeff Sarris

Why did I even bother putting mascara on? There's chocolate everywhere!

00:16:47 Amara Andrew

So this, as you can tell, is an example of evergreen content, because forever this will be funny to consume and watch.

00:16:56 Jeff Sarris

Yeah.

00:16:56 Amara Andrew

It doesn't matter that today is whatever the date is. This matters. This matters.

But this is something. This is something. But this isn't this isn't our example of evergreen content, but it is.

It technically is. It just so happens to work as evergreen content.

00:17:13 Jeff Sarris

Wow.

00:17:14 Amara Andrew

Lovely.

00:17:15 Jeff Sarris

So, TikTok.

00:17:16 Amara Andrew

So, yeah, and evergreen content means it doesn't matter when it's consumed, it is useful and helpful.

00:17:24 Jeff Sarris

You're done with it.

00:17:26 Amara Andrew

Putting her crumbs in her cup. Okay. Crumbs cup.

So, it doesn't matter when it's consumed. We create it today, and it lasts forever. And that's what we're doing with YouTube and why we recommend YouTube, is that everything compounds over time.

Ai, ai, ai.

00:17:41 Jeff Sarris

You thought this started rough. Pass out! God, I'm fucking gross.

Okay!

00:17:55 Amara Andrew

High.

00:17:56 Jeff Sarris

So,

00:17:56 Amara Andrew

Yeah.

00:17:57 Jeff Sarris

Yes.

00:17:57 Amara Andrew

Something that is not evergreen content is using trending audio.

00:18:01 Jeff Sarris

Yeah.

00:18:03 Amara Andrew

Over to you, Madam.

00:18:05 Jeff Sarris

I'm still clearing chocolate out of my teeth. Yeah, so TikTok, as you know, has music on it. That was like what it started as was Musical.ly?

00:18:15 Amara Andrew

Yes.

00:18:16 Jeff Sarris

I almost said Calendly. Musical.ly. And so, January 31st, all of a sudden, all the music was gone from TikTok.

Where'd it go? Well, not all of it, but a lot of music from really big artists. So, like Taylor Swift, Drake, ladies and gentlemen, the Weeknd.

00:18:36 Amara Andrew

You have to deliver it differently. Ladies and gentlemen, the Weeknd.

00:18:41 Jeff Sarris

I've already wasted enough of people's time choking on chocolate.

00:18:44 Amara Andrew

We're on the air for entertainment. We say entertain and inform. This is entertainment.

00:18:49 Jeff Sarris

Hi, there.

00:18:50 Amara Andrew

This is entertainment, whether you like it or not, this is entertainment.

00:18:53 Jeff Sarris

It's something. Anyway, I'm glad that actually happened with people around, 'cause normally that shit happens, and it's just you and I, and it's funny, but

00:19:03 Amara Andrew

I hate to break it to you, those are called cameras, those aren't people.

00:19:08 Jeff Sarris

Oh, my god, what?! Anyway, so music by a lot of really big name artists was just gone overnight. I think Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber were also included too, and like Olivia Rodrigo, just a lot of people and BTS.

So,

These were removed intentionally because these people were part of Universal Music Group, which is a big thing.

00:19:32 Amara Andrew

UMG.

00:19:33 Jeff Sarris

UMG. So, this was done intentionally because there was a deadline of the expiration for the UMG TikTok license. You're making me nervous.

Stop. So, they removed all the music. So now, when you look on TikTok and you look at, excuse me, the artists in question or you're looking at like you're looking at their profile to try to find their audio, it I am Are you okay?

It's been a lot if you haven't been here. I'm spitting still. I want to watch that in slow mo, 'cause I bet you could just see the chocolate go out.

I don't know. I don't have the thing up, 'cause I don't like seeing myself, so I'm just looking at the news article. Anyway.

So, all the music is gone from these people's profiles. So, when you go to somebody's video and they use the trending audio, it's just silent. And it is the most awkward fucking thing I As someone who's very awkward, it is the most awkward fucking thing that I've ever seen, because you just see people dancing, like the Blinding Lights song by the Weeknd that was super viral, you just see and just silence, just pure silence.

You don't even get the audio from the video, obviously, because it never like existed in that format. So, that is what we want to talk about today specifically, because you need to make content that is you. Like, if you rely on things like trending audio that can be

00:21:05 Amara Andrew

Things that are of the moment.

00:21:07 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, which, already, timely content, I'm not a big fan of, just because within 5 minutes of creating it, like

It depends on how much time you put into it. See, it's hard, because some people have launched really big brands from one viral video, which was very timely, but then that's their whole thing. It's exhausting, because

00:21:28 Amara Andrew

What's, before we go too far on that, what is a really big brand, though? Because

00:21:32 Jeff Sarris

Well, I guess not a really big brand, but they've gotten There's so many fucking ways we can go with this.

00:21:38 Amara Andrew

No, I know, and I think I think that thing's

00:21:40 Jeff Sarris

They've gotten a large audience, I guess. So, not brand, audience.

00:21:44 Amara Andrew

Yeah. To poke at, because my first thought is the cranberry juice guy, Dogface.

00:21:50 Jeff Sarris

Oh, we saw him at VidCon!

00:21:52 Amara Andrew

-huh, yeah.

00:21:52 Jeff Sarris

He was really nice.

00:21:53 Amara Andrew

But thinking about that, he has recognition. He has a thing. But what do you turn that into?

Yeah. I guess, though, I guess that's a bad example, because his isn't timely. His is just a moment he created that is sort of timeless.

You could watch that anytime.

00:22:13 Jeff Sarris

But it was timely because that song was trending at the time, because it was Fleetwood Mac.

00:22:18 Amara Andrew

Was it trending I think it was trending before?

00:22:20 Jeff Sarris

Yes.

00:22:20 Amara Andrew

Or trending because he did it?

00:22:21 Jeff Sarris

I think it was trending before.

00:22:22 Amara Andrew

Okay.

00:22:23 Jeff Sarris

I'm not 100% certain, but I'm pretty sure it was trending before.

00:22:28 Amara Andrew

But where this does come into play then is now if that song is no longer on TikTok, his video sort of doesn't have what it had. It's missing the magic. It's just him silently skateboarding, drinking cranberry juice.

00:22:42 Jeff Sarris

Yes.

00:22:43 Amara Andrew

So, you don't own your content.

00:22:45 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, which is really interesting, especially for using songs and things, 'cause it's That's what's hard, because I find those videos very funny and entertaining, especially if someone uses like somebody else's voice to do something. Like I find that entertaining to a certain extent. But it is so timely.

So, like even if you watch that video like a week from now, 2 weeks from now, you also have to be part of that lexicon too, where it's just like, "Oh, I know exactly what this reference is," or "I know what this means." But if you don't, then it's kind of like, "How is this funny?" or like But then it's you're finding your tribe, your group of See, I could talk myself into and out of it.

I'm a fucking lawyer.

00:23:26 Amara Andrew

Which is good. No, but this is good. Like this is a discussion.

00:23:29 Jeff Sarris

Yeah.

00:23:30 Amara Andrew

And this is where we want to be.

00:23:31 Jeff Sarris

'Cause I can see both ways. Like it's Okay, so I guess I shouldn't be so like, "No timely content." Like timely content can be funny and like good if you use it properly. But if you spend too much time on something that's very timely, then it's kind of like, "Well, that may have been a waste of time, and don't make your entire thing timely content," because then that's exhausting for you as a creator, unless that's like what you absolutely love to do.

But

00:23:55 Amara Andrew

But how sustainable is that?

00:23:57 Jeff Sarris

And speaking specifically about people that we work with, it's like no, you just need to get your stuff out there and just like

00:24:04 Amara Andrew

Yeah, as a realtor, that's timely isn't valuable, because this is the thing

00:24:08 Jeff Sarris

Which it can be fun,

00:24:09 Amara Andrew

It can be fun.

00:24:10 Jeff Sarris

But then it's like, but you also need to be providing value to people, because at the end of the day, you're trying to get clients.

00:24:15 Amara Andrew

And value is either entertainment and/or informing. But that's the thing is it's tough to every single day, month, week, if you're creating content or in your business, it's tough to always have to sell people on something new.

00:24:34 Jeff Sarris

Yeah.

00:24:35 Amara Andrew

And when it's timely, and in real estate, you're basically doing that. That is what the job is, is finding new people to buy, finding new people to sell, and constantly. You can't You can't sell once and then keep reaping rewards for it, unfortunately.

So, if your content is doing that, too, you're just on this treadmill in both facets of what you're doing. And ideally, sort of for me, the perfect business is one where you sell once and continue to serve and help those people. I hate "continue to serve." I know, I was like, "Oh, okay." It's not like that, but I don't like that phrasing.

00:25:11 Jeff Sarris

"Continue to service your people."

00:25:12 Amara Andrew

But you just continue to help them get to where they want to be.

00:25:17 Jeff Sarris

Yeah.

00:25:17 Amara Andrew

And that to me is the best kind of business. Just want to make sure this is still working since you don't have yours, up. But that is the goal.

And I think for me, if it's not the business, it's at least the goal with the content. Yeah, she has a big spot on her shirt. They won't see it, 'cause your laptop's in the way, but I'll take a photo, so it's very

00:25:36 Jeff Sarris

No!

00:25:36 Amara Andrew

Huh? What?

00:25:37 Jeff Sarris

I spill on myself all the time. That's mostly why I started wearing black.

00:25:42 Amara Andrew

Not to be cool, like me.

00:25:43 Jeff Sarris

Yeah. Before I knew you, I was just like, "One day, I think he'll wear black." Hey, I got you to wear more black, so whatever.

00:25:53 Amara Andrew

I literally wore all these clothes when we met.

00:25:56 Jeff Sarris

No. This MAVEN shirt I'm wearing?

00:26:02 Amara Andrew

Timeliness. But, yeah, anyway, so evergreen content's very valuable. The problem now if you don't own your content wholly, if you don't own the audio, you don't own something about what you're creating, you are minimizing your potential long-term benefit from it.

So, what's happening now on TikTok, which I think is sort of hilarious, is people obviously were just like, "I look like an idiot now, all my videos are just silent and I'm dancing."

00:26:33 Jeff Sarris

Yeah.

00:26:33 Amara Andrew

And then, they there are some people who are like, "I'm just going to sing these songs now." Which is so fucking funny. It is so funny.

00:26:41 Jeff Sarris

Doo-doo-doo-doo-doo.

00:26:42 Amara Andrew

Yeah, because it's they're realizing the importance of owning their content without really knowing that's what they're realizing. But, like, 'cause in like a formal way, like me talking about this with people, like I've said this for 15 years to people, and it's why we use, like, WordPress for websites instead of being locked into some platform.

And like, all these things WordPress is open source, you literally own everything you create there, no one else owns it. So, things like that I've talked about for so long where people on TikTok are discovering like, "Oh, well, wait, I'm not in control of that. What am I in control of?

In control? The sounds I make, so let me sing these songs." And like I don't know how to sing, but at least my videos will always work, which is good?

00:27:30 Jeff Sarris

Well, and I was thinking about it, too, as we were just talking, I wonder if TikTok so, they push videos. Like I have videos from 3 years ago now that people are still finding and like liking and commenting on and shit like that. Like one of my most popular videos is about the Salem Witch Trial House.

I've never been there in my life, but I made a video about it because I thought it was really cool, or the Witch House, not Witch Trial House. But that's like one of my most popular videos, which is really funny. People have been finding it and like are still engaging with it, and it's one of my most popular videos.

I'm just talking in a circle, but

00:28:08 Amara Andrew

How many views on that one?

00:28:09 Jeff Sarris

Oh, I don't know, a lot. Like it did really well on YouTube, specifically. So, if you literally Google "Salem Witch House," I pop up as one of the first results, which is very funny.

00:28:18 Amara Andrew

Yeah.

00:28:19 Jeff Sarris

But, and it's the shittiest fucking video, also.

00:28:21 Amara Andrew

'Cause it was just something you did quickly.

00:28:24 Jeff Sarris

Oh, yeah, I was just like, "I just want to like talk about this and share it with people."

00:28:27 Amara Andrew

And early in your, like, creating video journey.

00:28:29 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, that was like one of my first videos. But so the fact that TikTok pushes that to people or pushes all these different videos that I've done, does do they do that then with these videos that have the trending audio, or is it just dead, like dead, because why would they push something where it doesn't have audio to it anymore?

'Cause nobody's going to want to watch it, 'cause it's like, "What the fuck is this idiot doing, just dancing to silence?"

00:28:57 Amara Andrew

Well, and I wonder

00:28:59 Jeff Sarris

So all that content is gone. Like your entire catalog could just be wiped away, and then it's like, well, now I need to figure out what else I'm going to do, because that was like my main thing. So, like if you're at least doing both at the same time, you still have, like, evergreen versus timely content, you still have stuff there.

It's just not going to be all your like silly, goofy, entertaining stuff necessarily or like that kind of content.

00:29:23 Amara Andrew

But you pose a really good question. So, even if the audio's still there, TikTok isn't a "get a lot of followers." TikTok is a discovery platform. It's It's a different I'm blanking on the actual phrasing, but they are distributing your content to people that they know will like it whether the people know you or not.

00:29:45 Jeff Sarris

Social graph, is that what you're looking for?

00:29:46 Amara Andrew

Yeah, yeah, more like that, social graph. It's not the social graph, it's a

00:29:50 Jeff Sarris

I forget the term.

00:29:50 Amara Andrew

Whatever, it doesn't matter. But so that poses a great question. Are they going Is TikTok, then, sending things out people will like, but will you get dinged when you use trending audio later, because it's no longer trending?

So, that Are they going to be like, "No one cares about this anymore. Like, we don't know what the content of your video is, but no one's listening to this sound in 2024, we'll never show it to anyone." You know what I mean?

00:30:22 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, and I've had this, too, where like during the pandemic and everything, like obviously, it was just like we're all on TikTok. And after you see one trending audio video, then you see another one, then you see five more, then you see 10 more, and it's like, "Yeah, I fucking get it."

00:30:38 Amara Andrew

That's like the definition of trending.

00:30:39 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, it's like, "Okay, like I get it. You're all doing the same exact fucking dance, and like yours isn't funnier or better or anything, unless it's like unless it's like one-upping it in some way. Even if it's so much worse, like make it like really bad, 'cause then at least it's different from everything else.

But that also can hurt you, too. I don't know, I have like conflicted feelings, 'cause it could be like a fun little cheat code to get more eyeballs, but then it's not good for like sustainable platform, 'cause also then like, what are you Are you getting motherfucking texts? Bitch, I'm here.

Who else are you texting?

00:31:22 Amara Andrew

Hey, you know. I have do not disturb on 24/7. There are you, ding-ding, two other people, and my parents.

00:31:30 Jeff Sarris

Did you call me ding-ding?

00:31:31 Amara Andrew

Yeah, you ding-ding. Yeah, you, No, you, three people, and my parents are the only ones that get through do not disturb, and you know the three.

00:31:40 Jeff Sarris

Do I?

00:31:40 Amara Andrew

Yeah. Ooh! Ooh!

Just teasing. I mean, I can say it if you want, it doesn't really matter. Ooh!

Who? Can you guess?

00:31:47 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, Dave.

00:31:48 Amara Andrew

-huh.

00:31:49 Jeff Sarris

Josh.

00:31:50 Amara Andrew

-huh.

00:31:51 Jeff Sarris

Ooh, who's the third? This is actually a fun little guessing game.

00:31:54 Amara Andrew

Oh, you know. Like, I thought you would guess the third quicker.

00:31:57 Jeff Sarris

Third? Jill?

00:32:00 Amara Andrew

No.

00:32:01 Jeff Sarris

Do I need the first letter?

00:32:03 Amara Andrew

Yeah.

00:32:03 Jeff Sarris

R.

00:32:04 Amara Andrew

Ryan?

00:32:05 Jeff Sarris

No. Oh, Ricardo, duh. Of course.

Anyway, I was trying to think like work modes Yeah, I forgot. Yeah, I only have two people or three that can get through. It's me and Ricardo and my dad.

00:32:28 Amara Andrew

But see, that's all that matters. So, yeah, we could do a whole episode on why you have Do Not Disturb mode. 'Cause I know if he calls, it's like specific, so yeah.

And why Do Not Disturb mode is so valuable and how you get stuff done.

00:32:39 Jeff Sarris

Yeah.

00:32:40 Amara Andrew

With it, but that's a different topic for another time.

00:32:42 Jeff Sarris

Well, that was a fun guessing game. Yeah, so TL;DR, you can use trending audio, but just be really careful, because it could just be gone in 2 seconds, and then your video is just useless.

00:32:53 Amara Andrew

You need to think of it as ephemeral. What I'm creating here is only for today.

00:32:56 Jeff Sarris

Yeah.

00:32:57 Amara Andrew

I'm not creating for my future, I'm not building a platform.

00:33:01 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, and some people spend so much time and energy on these trending videos, which is fine, because from an art perspective, that is its own art form, which is cool. Like, I would actually want to study that a lot more now that I'm saying it, 'cause it is that ephemerality. Like it is almost like a Buddhist principle where you make your mandala and then it's like, "Oh, now you clear it off and start again."

00:33:24 Amara Andrew

Melt the mandala.

00:33:25 Jeff Sarris

Oh, my god. Anyway. That is also a topic for another day.

But, just that ephemerality, but that's like not how people are approaching it, obviously. It's like, "Well, no, this is like going to knock the socks off people." Like in certain

00:33:41 Amara Andrew

Yeah, maybe.

00:33:41 Jeff Sarris

Areas where we are, there are like certain videos that people are making

00:33:46 Amara Andrew

Do you mean areas that we are meaning in real estate? Okay.

00:33:49 Jeff Sarris

Like in real estate, yeah, like in specific groups, it's like, "Oh, I need to make this video to really like knock everybody's toes up there."

00:33:57 Amara Andrew

I know what you wanted to say there, but it's fine. We'll just gloss over that. Be tripping over something like Greg.

00:40:03 Jeff Sarris

That's like maybe I should say that on this podcast.

00:34:11 Amara Andrew

Yeah, it's fine. That'll be for After Dark or my OnlyFans.

You said that in a way that someone listening would be like, "She has an OnlyFans?" Like you said it so nonchalant.

00:34:20 Jeff Sarris

Yeah.

00:34:20 Amara Andrew

-huh. You didn't know that? Subscribe.

00:34:25 Jeff Sarris

Just teasing. $49 a month for nothing. I'm too expensive. I wish I could do that because

00:34:31 Amara Andrew

You can do whatever you want.

00:34:33 Jeff Sarris

I think I could do it. You could do I wish I could do that, because I think I could do it.

00:34:38 Amara Andrew

Yeah.

00:34:39 Jeff Sarris

Amara Logic. It's Amara math. Heard of girl math, coupon math,

00:34:44 Amara Andrew

Coupon math?

00:34:45 Jeff Sarris

Guy math, Amara math.

00:34:48 Amara Andrew

Amara maths?

00:34:49 Jeff Sarris

Amara Mathers.

00:34:50 Amara Andrew

Ay, ay, ay.

00:34:52 Jeff Sarris

What? Amara Mathers, Andrew. Do you see a ring on this finger?

00:35:01 Amara Andrew

That's also a topic for

00:35:05 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, so ephemerality.

00:35:10 Amara Andrew

But yeah, anyway, so we're not super keen on it, but using it, it depends what your goals are. That's the At the end of the day, what are your goals? Do you want to create something that can get a lot of views quickly, or do you want to create something that ideally will have slow growth?

00:35:26 Jeff Sarris

Well, yeah, like if you have a client going to your page, or your profile, whatever, what do you want them to think or feel about you first and foremost? Like 'cause for me, I'd be like, "Oh, fuck, this person's like really cool. Like I love it." But then also, I want to be like, "Oh, and they know their shit." Like that's really cool.

And seeing that somebody has nicer videos versus like maybe not so nice, I'd be like, "Oh, they're like doing really well, so then like I need to work with this person."

00:35:53 Amara Andrew

Nicer videos versus not so nice?

00:35:55 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, so like quality, I'm thinking. Like

00:35:57 Amara Andrew

Like if you mean like side-by-side

00:35:59 Jeff Sarris

Like if it looked like fucking handycam footage.

00:36:01 Amara Andrew

And like they have a nice video and then like a really bad one?

00:36:03 Jeff Sarris

No, if they didn't have nice videos at all and it was just pure, shaky, not well-lit. Like that's fine if that's like what you can just do for now, but just get a fucking light. It makes a world of difference.

But just if I saw those two together personally, I would just be like, "Oh, well, I want to go for the person who has like the really well," but hard because I'm fucking biased because I come from Exactly. Like I come from an art background, so it's just like, "Oh, well, I'm going to go for the more visually appealing thing, always."

00:36:30 Amara Andrew

Oh, yeah, and I come from Clearly. Yeah, my laptop. Emotionally.

It was me. But like websites, too, because like that's where I come from, is design and building websites and doing all this stuff for so many years and you're laughing in my face.

00:36:48 Jeff Sarris

You come from a land down under. Oh, I do. Down Under.

Down Under what? Down Under the border, almost. You're not Under the Arizona.

You don't even know where Arizona is. Yeah, somewhere.

00:37:11 Amara Andrew

Yeah.

00:37:12 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, where do we go now?

00:37:13 Amara Andrew

Speaking of shaky, poorly lit footage,

00:37:18 Jeff Sarris

Oh, this thing's fucking sweet.

00:37:19 Amara Andrew

So the DJI Osmo Pocket 3.

00:37:22 Jeff Sarris

I think I want to get my own to play with.

00:37:24 Amara Andrew

I mean, we have one. We don't need two. This thing is so fun.

00:37:31 Jeff Sarris

It's really neat.

00:37:32 Amara Andrew

Like this might be my new favorite camera.

00:37:35 Jeff Sarris

So many cameras on me.

00:37:37 Amara Andrew

You have so many cameras on you. But this might be my new favorite camera. This thing is wild.

So, it's just a stabilizer. This thing is That was very like Tom Segura delivery. It's just a stabilizer, but you can flip it around.

I don't know why I'm even saying this. I don't even know what I need to say. Just that I really like this and we've been having fun with it already.

It's so small, it's pocketable, it'll just sit on you the rest of this episode. Sit on you. Facing you.

OnlyFans. No, but highly recommend getting this, if you can find it. Right now, it's out of stock out of stock everywhere.

Strangely, Best Buy had it, so I ordered it from them. But now, I think it's out of stock there, too. But this is just fun, and you can like run around with it, and it's nice and stabilized.

It'll work well in low light, which is really nice.

00:38:30 Jeff Sarris

It works so well. I was literally running through the house last night with it, and it was really fun.

00:38:34 Amara Andrew

And it's like a simple flip to turn it on and turn it off, so just doing that turns it on. You can do this and like takes 2 seconds, turns right off, so nice. Promo code.

Yeah. It's so simple and affordable. It's like $500 if you get it without the creator kit, like six 600 or something with the creator kit.

00:38:59 Jeff Sarris

It's really nice.

00:39:00 Amara Andrew

Definitely what we're going to recommend to a lot of people moving forward, because you can also get it with a Bluetooth microphone, which is so nice. You just clip it on

00:39:09 Jeff Sarris

Well, and it's nice because it's all made with that intention, whereas all their devices aren't. And then it's like, "Okay, well, what kind of phone do you have? What kind of this do you have?

Oh, you want to add a mic to it?" Like we just had a friend who she's trying to set up her gimbal, and then now adding the mic, I think it counterbalances the gimbal, so then it's like, "Oh, now" So she needs a counterweight.

00:39:23 Amara Andrew

Yeah, with this, the beauty is the mic is automatically connected. It's Bluetooth. It'll work with your phone, too.

You can use it for everything. But you can just turn this on, use it, you can get the footage right on your phone, with a little bit of trouble right now with the app, but there's a workaround if you have it and you run into trouble, let us know. But, highly recommend this.

This is This might be the most fun

00:39:49 Jeff Sarris

"Let us know. I'm having trouble with the app." It's like, "Cool."

00:39:52 Amara Andrew

Well, no, because you have to like turn off cellular, you have to reinstall It's like a weird thing for some reason with the Mimo app right now, but highly recommend this, and this is the most fun I've had with a camera in a little bit, and we've only had it for a day, so

00:40:10 Jeff Sarris

Well, we went to the park for a walk yesterday and you were very into it.

00:40:14 Amara Andrew

-huh.

00:40:15 Jeff Sarris

I was like, "I'm just fucking walking."

00:40:16 Amara Andrew

Running around in slow motion.

00:40:17 Jeff Sarris

Yeah.

00:40:18 Amara Andrew

And then also filming in slow motion, so it was extra slow.

00:40:22 Jeff Sarris

I always run in slow motion.

00:40:24 Amara Andrew

But anyway, highly recommend DJI Osmo Pocket 3 if you're curious about looking into a new camera and you want to shoot content like on the go.

00:40:34 Jeff Sarris

It's funny because you're not talking to me, but you're looking at me, and it's interesting. Excuse me.

00:40:46 Amara Andrew

I'm sharing it with the people who are sitting beside us.

00:40:50 Jeff Sarris

Oh, hi!

00:40:51 Amara Andrew

So, before we wrap, should

00:40:53 Jeff Sarris

Gimme a hypothetical.

00:40:54 Amara Andrew

So this, now this is a real one. Like this is

00:40:57 Jeff Sarris

Oh, boy.

00:40:58 Amara Andrew

It's a very good question. I heard this from Nick Gray. He is He wrote, what is it?

"2-Hour Cocktail Party." He's like a really awesome guy, great community builder in his whole thing.

00:41:11 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, I want to hang out with him. I want to go to one of his parties.

00:41:12 Amara Andrew

Yeah, he's in Austin, Texas, and he's done a ton. He used to do museum tours as a business that was very successful, and now he wrote this book, throws these parties, and everything. But this question definitely had me curious.

It's something worth pondering, but it's It's actually kind of deep. So

00:41:35 Jeff Sarris

Jesus, just get to the question.

00:41:37 Amara Andrew

If someone were to become you today, so you were to switch lives with someone, what's the first thing they would change?

00:41:50 Jeff Sarris

Probably my underwear. On any given day, dirty underwear. That was fucking disgusting.

00:42:01 Amara Andrew

No, but isn't that actually like really like

00:42:02 Jeff Sarris

That would be the first thing they would change.

00:42:04 Amara Andrew

If you were to switch lives with someone, what's the first thing someone else would change about your life? Right? Because it's sort of like The question is sort of, "What's the thing you're not quite doing right now?

What could make your life better or whatever it is?" But looking at it from an outsider's perspective, I think is really fascinating to be like, "This is now someone else's life, what would they not like about it and change immediately?"

00:42:34 Jeff Sarris

Well, it also depends on who the person would be taking over my life.

00:42:37 Amara Andrew

It definitely does.

00:42:38 Jeff Sarris

. I mean, I think it depends more on who the person is versus me, 'cause they're bringing their own baggage into my shoes, literally. Get your baggage out of my shoes!

I mean, I don't know, that's like super subjective, 'cause it depends on the other person, where maybe they don't like our house, or maybe they don't like you, or maybe they don't like my style, and then they start dressing me. That would probably be the first thing, because a lot of people have a lot to say about me wearing mostly black.

They would probably introduce a lot more color into my wardrobe, 'cause a lot of people bring that up for me, and I could give a fuck less about colors for me, personally, even though we have colors in the house. But, I don't know why, I feel like that would be the first thing. So, they'd be like, "But you're joyful.

Why don't you wear color?" Bitch, I don't need color to feel joyful. -huh. I think that's It's my absence of color that lets me be colorful on the inside. Yeah.

00:43:37 Amara Andrew

Yeah, I mean, I think that's pretty insightful.

00:43:38 Jeff Sarris

Fuck, fuck, fuck. See, colorful.

00:43:40 Amara Andrew

This is your outside.

00:43:42 Jeff Sarris

No, it's like the Johnny Cash song. Like, it's so funny because Man in Now this is like a separate tangent, but, well, you know I love music a lot, so I always talk about music, but Johnny Cash Man in Black, that song, perfectly encapsulated why I wear black without even meaning to. Like I hadn't heard the song before I started wearing black.

00:44:01 Amara Andrew

So, how's that go?

00:44:01 Jeff Sarris

Oh, I'd have to read the lyrics. 'cause like it's so perfect in what it is, not the fucking movie.

00:44:11 Amara Andrew

So, there's this movie, it's called Men in Black.

00:44:13 Jeff Sarris

Oh, yeah, starring Johnny Cash, is that

00:44:15 Amara Andrew

Yeah. Oh, th- there was an old man in it, right? That's him.

00:44:18 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, it was his last, his last thing. I should probably look up lyrics. Oh, there it is.

Essentially, it's just, "I don't wear bright colors because not everything's okay in the world," is kind of like the gist of it.

00:44:34 Amara Andrew

Okay.

00:44:35 Jeff Sarris

But it's like it's a very Did you look it up? Let's get the real

00:44:38 Amara Andrew

Yeah. I don't want to Now, this is See, this will get into a somber territory. But it's just like, until things are perfect and okay in the world, I'm not going to wear colors, because there's kind of no reason to.

So, it's partly how I feel, but also I don't need the colors to define me. And like it's totally fine if you love wearing bright colors and it makes you happy, like that's amazing, but like black to me actually makes me feel happy, and I don't know why. Like I'm I'm a little thundercloud.

But it just like It just makes getting dressed so much easier, too, 'cause like I like getting dressed, but I like playing more with like textures and fabrics versus colors, if that makes sense. But yeah, anyway. What about you?

What's the archetype of the person who gives you a hard time about wearing black? Dickhole. Archetype?

Yeah.

00:45:32 Jeff Sarris

Oh, I don't know, it's like a wide variety of people.

00:45:34 Amara Andrew

'Cause I know it's different because you're, if you didn't know, a woman.

00:45:38 Jeff Sarris

What?! Na-!

00:45:41 Amara Andrew

But, like for me, no one ever No one notices me. No one notices what I'm wearing, anything.

00:45:47 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, because guys are supposed to wear darker. Well, like a uniform. Like I've always liked that.

00:45:53 Amara Andrew

Yeah. It's sort of the, like, founder perspective, where it's like, "I don't want decisions." I have enough decisions, like, all day long. I just put on the same six things.

00:46:04 Jeff Sarris

Turtleneck. Same turtleneck. If you wore a turtleneck, I would fucking die.

00:46:09 Amara Andrew

You want me to wear a turtleneck?

00:46:11 Jeff Sarris

I don't think so, actually. It'd be kind of weird. But anyway, what about you?

What do you think would be the first thing someone would change?

00:46:19 Amara Andrew

I was trying to think about it. So, I almost I feel like the question's implying you're changing trading lives with someone, but it's implying what's the thing that you know inside that isn't wouldn't be as loved generally. So, that's sort of how I'm seeing it.

Not that like you don't like it or for me that I don't like this part of it, but I would see almost anyone that would trade with me would probably work a lot less.

00:46:48 Jeff Sarris

Is that plant in the corner right?

00:46:50 Amara Andrew

If I trade traded lives with the plant in the corner, is that Is that what you were waiting for the whole time? You're like waiting for a pause. Well, like 'cause you know, like I'm doing business-related things all day, every day.

But that's what I love. Like, that's my sport. That's my competition.

If someone brings up that they're running into trouble in some way, I am just immediately kicked into gear and I'm like, "We should talk about it right now. Like, how can we get you started? Where can we go?

Where do you want to be? Like, what's the path that we can carve out that'll get you going in the right direction?" Not a path dot, dot, dot, dot, dot, dot path that gets you there, but like how can we get you calibrating your compass like to go in the right direction of the destination that right now you want, which will change in the future.

Like that gets me really jazzed and excited, and all of my time is spent how some people would say is working. But to me, it's creativity, and it's

00:47:50 Jeff Sarris

Well, and it's different though, because you don't treat it as working. You treat it as you're making something. So, like I've always said, like that's your art,

Which is very different from like traditional art. Yeah, 'cause, yeah, you like sports.

00:48:05 Amara Andrew

But it's like my art and sport, because the competition, the competition with myself, it's like Kidney Stone Diet right now. This weekend, I came up with a completely new idea.

00:48:15 Jeff Sarris

It's really cool.

00:48:16 Amara Andrew

Yeah, for how I want to approach selling product on there, and I think it's going to really change everything for the better, for everyone. Like there's diff- different metrics like revenue, but also for the members of the community. Like, will this make their experience better?

And there's all these different things. And it's like, how do you get that sweet spot that improves everything for everyone all at once? But like, that gets me really excited, so that was Saturday.

I'm like building out a new landing page, structuring it all out, figuring out like, "Okay, how will this make sense to also pitch it to Jill, like our partner, the actual nurse at Kidney Stone Diet," because everything is like a negotiation. And I don't mean with her, I mean in life. If I was just like, "What do you think about this?" and in two words I said it, the likelihood of someone responding positively is low.

But if I say, "These are all the reasons why I think this is the right move. This is how I see it happening. This is visually how we'll do it.

What do you think?" The when I know this is something that is going to be like a strong change, that then gets a better, thoughtful response, because I gave it a thoughtful input. Anyway, as you can tell, I like this stuff. But

00:49:35 Jeff Sarris

You do.

00:49:37 Amara Andrew

But I think that's the first thing someone would change is they're like

00:49:40 Jeff Sarris

They would take my life

00:49:41 Amara Andrew

Well, I think the normal person who would take over my life, we'd change trade lives, would be like, "What about like going out and like partying," or whatever it is that they sort of have innate to them. Like where how do you have time for that? And it's like, "Well, that's just not me.

That's not my That's not my thing." So, I think that would be the first thing someone would change for me in the broadest of sense of like sort of anyone. Like even if you became me 6 years ago, I think you would have done the same. Now, I think it's different though.

00:50:20 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, I don't know.

00:50:21 Amara Andrew

'Cause you have the passion for this stuff like I do, which is really interesting.

00:50:25 Jeff Sarris

Oh, yeah, 'cause I'm very competitive.

00:50:27 Amara Andrew

-huh. Well, yeah, but and

00:50:28 Jeff Sarris

Which you'll find out if you're at our board game night at Tom Ferry Elite.

00:50:32 Amara Andrew

And like it's competitive with us, with ourselves, too, most of the time. It's not like, "I want to destroy this person."

00:50:38 Jeff Sarris

So's he.

00:50:38 Amara Andrew

Well, at least for me. Like I want like maybe this person is like, "Oh, they're doing so well." That inspires me, because now I want to do well.

00:50:48 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, exactly. Well, yeah, it's more inspirational to be like, "Okay, well, I was here a month ago, 2 days ago, whatever. Where can I go now to be like even better, or do better things, or offer more to people that we work with."

00:51:01 Amara Andrew

And, again, for everyone to win. For us to win, for them to win. Like, that's the exciting part.

00:51:04 Jeff Sarris

Oh, yeah, like I don't give a shit, as long as everybody can win, then it's like, cool, that works.

00:51:09 Amara Andrew

But, yeah. Does that

00:51:10 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, that's interesting.

00:51:11 Amara Andrew

Does that change your question, the your answer to the question at all, thinking about it that way?

00:51:15 Jeff Sarris

Well, yeah, I like your answer a lot better.

00:51:18 Amara Andrew

Well, also I had time to think about it, 'cause I was really I was like,

00:51:20 Jeff Sarris

'Cause I'm trying to think

00:51:21 Amara Andrew

It seems personal because it's suddenly like, "Oh, what's how are you living incorrectly?" is sort of the question. But I don't think there's any right or wrong for life. I think we have to define what our meaning and purpose and everything is and spend our time accordingly.

But we're all going to have a different perspective, because we all have a different life path.

00:51:50 Jeff Sarris

I don't really know. I feel like there are a few things. Like this makes me sound very unself-aware, but

00:51:56 Amara Andrew

No, it doesn't.

00:51:57 Jeff Sarris

Like I have no idea. 'Cause, like, I went for like superficial things or like surface level things, but

00:52:04 Amara Andrew

Again, I've thought about this for like 4 days, so

00:52:08 Jeff Sarris

Yeah.

00:52:08 Amara Andrew

I'm I'm throwing it on you in this conversation, 'cause it's a fun way to do it.

00:52:12 Jeff Sarris

Yeah. I don't know, I'm always doing something, but I don't think that would be like on someone's nerves. I don't know.

I mean, I feel like there could be a couple things that I'm just not thinking about. Like maybe even like family time or something. But, again, like I'm saying, it really depends on the other person.

00:52:37 Amara Andrew

Yeah, what are their priorities?

00:52:39 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, 'cause like then in their life, I'd be like, "You spend way too much fucking time talking to your family. You need to focus on what you need to do," or something where, like, thankfully, we're very similar with a lot of different things like that where like, obviously, family time can be important, but you also need to put on your own life mask before you spend time with your family.

00:53:02 Amara Andrew

Yeah, oxygen mask is usually the word, but I like life mask, as well. Life mask. Actually, I've never shown you what's below my life mask.

00:53:11 Jeff Sarris

Slipknot!

00:53:12 Amara Andrew

Could you imagine this is the mask, and below it is a Slipknot face?

00:53:16 Jeff Sarris

Holy fuck, that would be really fun! Which one would you go for?

00:53:19 Amara Andrew

Which one would I go for? What do you mean?

00:53:20 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, which Slipknot mask?

00:53:23 Amara Andrew

Oh, they changed, like they evolved over time, so I actually couldn't

00:53:27 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, but original Slipknot.

00:53:28 Amara Andrew

I'd have to also look.

00:53:30 Jeff Sarris

I like the spiky one. Or no, I like, Corey's mask, Corey Taylor. I always liked his mask.

Oh, yeah, that's like totally different now.

00:53:42 Amara Andrew

Yeah, they've really changed and evolved.

00:53:46 Jeff Sarris

It's like not as creepy now. I guess, kind of, I don't know, whatever, anyway.

00:53:53 Amara Andrew

Yeah, I don't love Corey Taylor's. That one feels a little something.

00:53:58 Jeff Sarris

Like not as my everyday mask, you know?

00:54:02 Amara Andrew

Yeah, as you have. As one does.

00:54:06 Jeff Sarris

I forget. I always liked the spiky one, but I do actually like Corey Taylor's. He is such a cute guy, also.

Just like a cute person. Like, his soul.

00:54:16 Amara Andrew

Like who he is as a person is so thoughtful,

00:54:21 Jeff Sarris

Just like such a little sweetie.

00:54:23 Amara Andrew

So fun,

00:54:23 Jeff Sarris

-huh. I would want to hang out with him, 'cause he seems like very fun. I feel like we'd get along very well.

00:54:28 Amara Andrew

I feel like it comes through when you think It makes sense when you think about it, because Slipknot is a wild piece of art.

Like, multisensory art. And like the visual, too, which so many bands never did. Like so many bands are like, "We make music, we go home."

00:54:46 Jeff Sarris

Yeah.

00:54:46 Amara Andrew

Where they're like, "We make an experience, and we're playing music."

00:54:50 Jeff Sarris

Well, that's why I like the band Ghost. It's like, I think it's Norwegian. Ghost.

Yeah, they have like quite Oh, Swedish. Fuck. Sorry.

But they're very theatrical, and like very creepy, but I very much like them, 'cause it's just like the whole vibe and everything. I don't know, anyway. Me-me-me-me-me.

The end. But yeah, that was a really good question.

00:55:13 Amara Andrew

Yeah, I thought it was really fascinating.

00:55:15 Jeff Sarris

I'll be thinking about that all day.

00:55:16 Amara Andrew

Yeah, but yeah, we're just about almost up to an hour or so,

00:55:20 Jeff Sarris

Jesus.

00:55:20 Amara Andrew

What do you say we wrap this episode here?

00:55:22 Jeff Sarris

No.

00:55:23 Amara Andrew

No?

00:55:24 Jeff Sarris

No.

00:55:24 Amara Andrew

No?

00:55:25 Jeff Sarris

No. No? No.

Anyway, yeah, that sounds good. I don't know where my headphones are, so you just have to

00:55:31 Amara Andrew

And at this point, it doesn't even matter. I'll play the outro. I'll figure out the intro, outro music using Riverside, but we'll also see.

Last week, I mentioned having the camera switch automatically and our microphones were too hot, so they were picking up each other. So, I am curious if this time it'll be auto-switching. If you've watched this far, you already know if it's auto-switching.

00:55:54 Jeff Sarris

Right.

00:55:56 Amara Andrew

And I can hear your mic your headphones clinking in my ear.

00:56:01 Jeff Sarris

I didn't hear anything.

00:56:02 Amara Andrew

I don't either, oh, because I muted it. So, thanks for tuning in. This has been What is MAVEN?

At whatismaven.com. I'm Jeff Sarris.

00:56:15 Jeff Sarris

I'm Amara Andrew. Bye. Beep.
